I love Jaguars, always have. Love Nirvana, so the combination of the 2 was something I dreamed of. However, it hit a brick wall with the relic'ing of the Cobain Jag. It is false, it is stupid, it looks ugly - I love cleaning my guitars after a good play and I knew I would resent the road worn after a while. I debated buying one over many months and instead went for a sonic blue mustang.

I was quite literally about to buy a Jag in addition to the Mustang with a view to having it completely stripped bare and a new finish / appointments added when just by chance someone mentioned on YouTube Fender were releasing an un-relic'd version this year. I couldn't believe it, and rushed over to the Fender site and saw it pictured there. Brand spanking new, with lovely shiny chrome. I am in heaven especially as they do the Lefty. I immediately put my Mustang up for sale and ordered the Jag today from the USA to be delivered to me in the UK.

So, KC Jag owners with the relic'ing?? In you heart of hearts - would you have preferred the new look?

I'm not an owner, but I have played one. I thought the tone and the neck were both excellent, along with all the usual Jaguar mojo. But, like you, I think relic'ing is silly and ugly, and the price was rather high compared to CP Jags, so I didn't buy it. But if I were to change my mind, it would definitely be a non-relic'ed version.

Heart of hearts? No way. Love my relic one. Woundn't change it for the world. I have enough guitars that end up chipped and dinged. Which is really annoying when trying to keep them pristine. Kinda suits me that the relic is beaten up as it would have ended up that way anyway. At least this way there's no heartache for me when it gets knocked and dropped etc.

I have seen both relic and non relic Cobain Jags up close. They both have their own appeal. If the non relic was sprayed in nitro for sure I would get that. The way it is the non relic will look pristine for a very long time and will never look as worn as Kurts. The job they do on the relic looks pretty good I must say. On the non relic they still drilled the holes for the original tuners. I like them both but I think I may go for the non relic in the end. I have a Yamaha electric from the 80's still and its pretty relic'd and it kinda looks cool with some mojo lol.

I returned the un relic'd one to Fender as it had a chunk out of the headstock and a nick out of the neck.

I got the replacement yesterday and this is what I found;

Finish - perfect, flawless. But it played like a pig.......

- 9’s strung on not 10’s (it should have 10’s on per Fender spec on their website)
- Frets are different heights and the action is so low there is severe fret buzz when tuned down half a step
- virtually no relief on neck
- strings wound ‘up’ the tuning peg (not down) so they are putting undue stress on the string trees
- bridge saddles not cut deep enough to hold string securely
- nut as above

I've taken it to a luthier to get it put right. One other point is the guitar was really dusty and covered in finger prints. But this was a factory fresh one - properly sealed with paper tape all round the outer box so it came from the factory like this.

This is my dream guitar so it's worth putting right in my eyes.

Just shocking really that Fender Mexico have not qc's it properly.

I just got one of these myself. Overall it's a beautiful guitar. The finish is pretty good compared to the Japanese Fenders but I noticed a few scratches on the back right out of the box...nothing deep so no worries. Some small cosmetic issues in the Quality control like scratches in the pickup ring just under the pickup screw, kinda like the screwdriver slipped off a few times when they were adjusting the pickup height. Also a small deep scratch on the chrome plate on the front near the volume. And the intonation was WAY OFF.

The cosmetics were small so I will live with it and once I dialed the intonation in she was a screamer!! :D Mine also has a nice heavy weight to it. Overall I love this guitar, just wish the QC was like the Japanese ones. It's still worth the money in my opinion.

I own a relic'd KC Jaguar and I love love love it still. It's more of a novelty thing for me than wanting a brand new guitar with the same specs. It's like holding a small piece of history exactly how he left it, even if it is a righty!
