Hello, I'm wondering if there's any rough formula to the value of older Fender Jaguars/Jazzmasters as it relates to non original parts.
I've heard that refinishing tends to cut the value in half but what about reissue parts like pick ups, bridges and knobs?

I'm basically looking at a refinished (well done but non original color) 63 Jazzmaster that has a fair amount of those things reissued (neck pick up (bridge pickup is original), bridge, and volume/tone knobs). The asking price is in the low 3000's which to me seems a little high for so many non original parts... but this is my first 50 year old guitar so I'm looking for some veteran insight.

One other thing that confuses me a little; he has a picture of the neck date (which is pretty blurry) and it looks to me like it reads 4SEP63... but he claims it reads ASEP63. Regardless I can't find a neck anywhere that reads in the same format. If it was an A style neck wouldn't that show up after the date? And if I'm right and it reads 4SEP63 shouldn't there be an A/B/C in there?

Thanks for reading, I'd appreciate any advice anyone might have.

I have seen sunburst Jazzmasters in near-original condition with an asking price near $3500 (including the original HSC). The seller of that guitar is way too optimistic -- unless you actually bite.

That's kind of how I feel.

Any ideas on the neck stamp? Were there stamps back then without an A,B, or C? Or if it is an A, did they ever put the letter *before* the date?

Don't know if this helps you or not, but here is a photo of the neck stamp on my 1962 Jazzmaster.

The heel stamps on the necks my '63 and '66 Strats followed an identical format......DD/MMM/YY followed by a "B" (denoting standard fretboard width).

Thanks Arjay, that's in line with everything I've read up to this point. This neck stamp most definitely does not have a letter after the 63. I'm wondering if it's a fake or if anyone has ever heard about an A (or B or C) appearing *before* the date. Or maybe there were some stock necks that had no letter at all?

I appreciate the helpful comments. Thanks again.

That's not quite accurate. The first digits in those codes is not the date. It is a model code (i.e., Strat, Jaguar, etc.).

The neck size code could be missing because they didn't have enough ink when they stamped it or it could have gotten rubbed off along the way.

"4" denotes Jazzmaster, "JUN 62" obviously means it was made in June 1962 and the "B" denotes a standard nut width.

If there is no letter after the year, I would question it big time, and no letter ever appeared before the date, only a number.

If it's a genuine Jazzmaster, it will have a "4" as the very first digit.
