All the Kurt Cobain Mustangs are pretty much sold out now after 2 years. Will they be making any more or is that the end of them? My local music store says it can still be ordered from Fender but they have none in stock in the Fender warehouse in California. They have no idea how long or if they are still being made for sure. So are they all discontinued now?

Based on what I see at online retailers AMS and MF, that model doesn't seem discontinued.

I emailed Fender and they said it's still a production model..BUT they have none at their warehouse. I'm wondering if the new batch will be made in mexico now? Kurt's mustangs were made in Japan at the same factory as the ones that are sold out now. The AMS website says they will be back in stock in April. Guess we just have to wait and see.

I got a few replies from Fender Customer service Rep. Paul Levesque, that gave me some good answers and was very fast with his reply(Thanks Paul):

"Hello,
That specific guitar is still a production model and has not been discontinued. You should be able to place an order without any issue.

Best Regards,
Paul Levesque"

And he also said they will continue to be made in Japan:

"Hello,
The Kurt Cobain Mustangs are all manufactured in Japan. The Jaguars are made in Mexico. I am not showing any in stock right now. But if you place an order one should be built for you. The wait might be a little while though. I don’t have an ETA.

Best Regards,

Paul Levesque"

I have one of the Sonic Blues on order for my almost 10 year old daughter. Sweetwater told me early April and that they're still in production. I got nervous when I had heard about discontinuation and bought one as her early birthday present. We shall see!!

Ordered one through Sweetwater about 6-8 weeks ago. Was initially told delivery first week of April. They just called today to inform me that it's not going to ship until June 6 :( .

Purchased it as a gift for my daughter's upcoming 10th birthday. It was going to be an early present. Now it's looking like it'll be just a few weeks early. Hope there are no more delays. Ordered a RH sonic blue with the tortoise shell pick guard.

So really it is out of production, but what Fender do is pool enough orders to make another batch. I think this guitar will be highly desirable in the next 10 years.

That's what seems to be the case here. I put an order in for a sonic blue one with my local dealer. All the three colors are beautiful really. I have the fiesta red, the competition blue with the stripe and just need the sonic blue one now. Been playing the ones I have and I must say they are turning into my favorite guitars.

I also have a Gibson Les Paul Custom, Gibson Les Paul Traditional, Gibson Les Paul Classic Custom, Gibson Les Paul Studio, 2 MIJ Charvels and a Fender Modern Player Mustang. I have been playing mainly the Mustangs lately and the Gibsons have been sitting  never would have thought that.

Also my Fender Modern Player Mustang has turned out to be a really good guitar. Its awesome for those that want a mustang and don't want to pay the $1000 for a Cobain or reissue 65.
At $500 the MPM is a fantastic guitar. The finish on mine was flawless. I directly compared the sound of the Cobain pickups and the p-90's on the MPM and it was really close in terms of how much it made me smile. :D They sound different but I really like the p-90 sound. This guitar is a great option for anyone wanting a Mustang. It's made in China but is a nice guitar nonetheless.

I bought a brand new blue Kurt Cobain mustang in march at a Miami Sam Ash for 749.00 they were clearing it out. The sales guys told me they had it in stock for over 2 years. I knew what it was worth and I collect made in japan fenders so I bought it. They had 2 so it must not sell well here. I am sure other stores across the country must still have some.

Heard from Sweetwater that my daughter's guitar arrived on Friday and is shipping out to California. They received one from Japan and there are others on the way. I did speak to someone in Fender Customer relations and they were able to look up the order from Sweetwater in their system and give me a timeline. They where so helpful and professional on the phone!! Will post pics when it arrives!!
