After a year on a very used/deteriorating Yamaha Pacifica I'm still loving learning and I'd like an upgrade - but I want a long termer and don't want to buy too cheap ie worthless a year later.
Logic/most people say MiM Strat. or a used American. Tried both Strats briefly and liked both - I'm not good enough to spot the difference so logic says MiM, tho I could stretch budget to an American.
But... a lefty Cobain Jaguar is avail at a good price and, tho we have't met, I'm in love (seen a right-hand and loved the look even more than the Strats) - but would that be a dumb move? Advice elsewhere on the Jaguar is v mixed, confusing. Would love to hear a clear answer please.
Whatever I get I'll still also upgrade to a better amp. Many thanks

ok.... guess from the deafening silence i'm on the wrong track (or wrong forum :? - didn't realise it was such a difficult question!!... There seems to be a lot of cheap copies of the Fenders everywhere so i'm going to check out a few other less ubiquitous brands..

Don't be offended for no answers - the question you're actually asking is "will I be happy with a Jaguar", and no one else but you can answer that. They're great guitars (not familiar with the Cobain Jag, though) but not everybody likes them.

If you want a clear opinion to help choose between a Stratocaster and a Jaguar:
Jazzmaster.

Thanks for the response, appreciated - I tried a few more makes but found nothing I liked. Eventually ended up travelling 6hrs round trip to try a l/h Cobain Jaguar (v rare in the UK!).... turns out brain was wrong, heart was right all along and we're now v happy together :)

Nice job, one should always follow the heart.

Hope you've forgiven the original silence of the forum - like I said, this question is/was/will be only yours to solve.
But try asking a technical question, you'll get a myriad of highly accurate answers - though often in a form of agitated thesis-antithesis dialogue...
(=read: a frivolous quarrel)

The biggest difference is the 24" scale of the Jaguar, as opposed to the 25.5" scale of the Strat.
I own and play both, but find lately that the tonality of the shorter scale and particular quirkiness of the Jaguar really makes for some interesting sound possibilities.
My Jag is also the Kurt Cobain version. I'm not a fan of KC at all, but I am a fan of this guitar....
After switching back to the three switch lower plate. I prefer all of the distinctions of the original jag setting possibilities, and anyone who is accidentally flicking the switches must just be brutalizing their guitar.
