Further to a couple of recent ebay sales I have now taken delivery of a brand new Modern Player Jaguar from Thomanns for the total sum of £206! (No sales tax for purchases from abroad under £240 in Jersey C.I. you see!). Around $300.

Well, what's it like I hear you ask.

I would firstly ask you to remember that this is a Chinese made Fender branded instrument. Not US, not MIM but also not Squire and that I am used to higher end guitars, check my signature.

So, it breaks down as follows:

Neck:
Horrible tint as you can see from the pics
Really nice C/D shape
Slightly flamed maple
Fret work is ace and not just for the price, I've seen MIMs at double the price with much sharper edges that I've had to dress. These are going to be left as is.
Rosewood board needs an oil
Vintage style tuners are much much higher quality than I expected. Firm but not too firm, much better than a MIJ 60s reissue Strat I had in the mid nineties

Body:
Great finish, can't see any imperfections
I can't work out if it's a one or two piece mahogany body. I'd assume two piece by the price.

Electrics:
Pots are cheap sh*t but work ok. (They'll be changed in due course for CTS)
Pickups growl and give a big midrange punch, I'll have to see what they are like through my gigging rig though
Input jack socket seems cheap and nasty

To say I was impressed would be a huge understatement. I'm incredibly happy with my purchase and I will be gigging it as is in the next few weeks.

I've added a couple of shots of the standard fender packaging as it's nice to see how these things come down. Thomann sent mine down in another box as well and good job as there was a 6 inch hole in the outer box when I picked it up.

Ran it through my gig rig last night at practice. First time I've used P90 style pickups. They sound really ratty in a good way! Really good for punk rock. I can see why billy joe Armstrong uses a p90 junior.

But, I think I'll be using this guitar as a test bed for boutique style pickups. I really like seymour Duncan's (pearly gates in neck on my charvel and slash sig pups in my LP). But I'd like to try either bare knuckle, lindy fralin or lollar to see what all the fuss is about.

For now though I'm über happy with my cheapy Jag and will be giving if a full setup tonight with my gauge strings a fret board oil and proper intonation adjustment.

Rock on!

Sacha

Well I thought I'd update you with the bad as well as the good where this bad $@! Jaguar is concerned.

I went to plug in and play today when I had a few spare minutes after wallpapering my boys bedroom. Bugera v5 all warmed up and Jaguar plugged in......

No valve distortion and a really weak signal, that's weird, ok so all three pickup positions are working, then ah the input jack is loose, easy fix. Unscrew the jack plate, tighten the nut, reinstall the jack plate and..... same issue. oh dear....

Right, maybe it's the amp, grab my trusty Lite-rosewood Tele, and all normal. So it's definitely the Jaguar, not good. So problem solving hat on and first port of call is a question, what have I recently done with the electronics? Measure the pots and tighten the bolts on the tone pot (only hand tight with a socket no ratchet).

All ok and the pots are both working. Now I'm dumbfounded. Then it started working again!!! Eh?

So I looked at the tone pot again and if I turn it past the stop point, bingo, the issue is back turn it the other way problem gone. Quick look at under the hood and when you turn the pot hard one if the lugs is hitting the wood in the cavity. Must be a dry solder joint which cuts the signal with a bit of pressure applied.

Tone pot properly tightened and no more issues.

Summary. QC on these Modern Players isn't great (loose tone pot, loose jack) still great value BUT for a newbie player without electronics knowledge this purchase could have turned into a bit of a nightmare. For me though it's all good, well, better than good as I feel I'm really bonding with my Jag.

Cheers all

Sacha

The long trip from China must have bumped stuff loose.
I hope you have it all tightened up now.

It looks great.

Nice score, a few loose bits or poor quality electrics arn't unusual. So long as the
guitar plays good its a win win situation.

Cool penguin by the way :)
