Dear Fender players,

hi, I'm Josh, new to the forums, and I've been playing Fender guitars since 2004. I have always had a knack for the Fender special edition runs (Esquire Custom GT amongst others).

I just got a pretty good offer on a 2004/2005 (?) Fender So-Cal Speed Shop Stratocaster, mint condition.

I was wondering, though, since the fingerboard is painted:
Would it spoil the entire paintjob IF I ever needed it to be refretted?

Also, what product would you use to clean painted fingerboards like these?

Thank you.

Kind regards
Josh

You can't be sure . See a qualified luthier if needed in 15 years

You'll may scratch the paint when playing IMO

Also, what product would you use to clean painted fingerboards like these?

Thank you.

I don't think Fender ever intended that these "curios" be played or if so, only occasionally. Routine fretboard wear is bound to occur should the instrument ever see regular duty and if re-fretted, such a procedure is bound to extract some toll on the painted finger board.

Yea for sure that finger board will eventually look like crap if played. Better hang that thing on top of your bar.

Indeed.

Instruments like these are like commemorative firearms......nobody actually fires them. Basically, they're wall-hangers.

In the mid '80s Ibanez did poly painted fretboards on some models like this DT-250 Image
Many of them were heavily played and still look brand new. Poly is tough stuff.

Lots of clear poly finishes still look pristine on '70s, '80s, '90s Fenders. Same for Rics with their conversion-varnish finished fretboards.

Some people wear out frets quickly. Other people can play a guitar for hours every day for decades and not even need a level&crown.

Yes, if it someday needs a refret the finish is likely to be damaged. If that day ever comes you could take the neck off and put on a conventional one (it'd still be kinda cool looking with a maple or rosewood neck), or retire the guitar and turn it into a wallhanger.

A lot of people don't think twice about buying nice pretty new cars, driving them for 10 years until they're beat to crap and then junking them. If you buy a new car, it loses more value as soon as you sign the sales contract than the $1000 or less that you'd pay for that guitar.

As far as cleaning/caring for it, it's a poly finish. Just like clear poly except with some pigment added. Wipe it with a slightly damp cloth if it gets dirty. If it gets really dirty wipe it with some naphtha. Maybe wax it every once in a while.

I'm not saying you should buy it -- there are lots of more utilitarian guitars for less money. If you've got a heavy hand and wear out frets quickly, or if you haven't been playing very long and don't know how quickly you wear out frets, like everyone said you should probably avoid it.

But I don't wear out frets quickly, and if that guitar appealed to me and I could get it at a good price I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
