Hi Everyone... I am a new register to the forums and have found some great reading already !!! I have just recently inherited a 1963 jazz master from my Dad. I have taking it to a local guitar shop to have a complete set-up done on it. I also asked for him to find out the serial number of the guitar, however the manufacturing date was (4DEC63B). He also took off the front plate cover and said the soldering, wires were original and in good shape. Any information would be greatly appreciated, such as if this is the original paint job, original pick ups etc...

Thank you Dave

The instrument's serial number is stamped on the neck plate.

1964. Looks minty, not sure about the paint job from here, should be 3 tones, here we're missing the orange between black and yellow.

Once it's cleaned up. Is it just me who shuddered at the exceptionally fatty fingerprints?

The paint job doesn't quite look right to me.

Show us what it looks like under the pickguard.

It may not be an entire refinish, might just be a touch up, especially the black.

Beautiful guitar. It does appear that the body might be a refin albeit an older one. Fender did have some issues with the red fading away due to interaction with light, but it usually left tell tale marks of a band that was visible but not red anymore and that does not appear to be the case here. And those fading problems were fixed by the time this guitar was made. If you look under the pickguard if it has red underneath it then the finish is original, if not I would suspect a refin. Still all in all, one heck of a nice looking guitar! A real keeper for sure!
