I'm looking to buy my first Jazzmaster and am having trouble deciding which route to go. I have been looking for a used AVRI Jazzmaster (new ones are out of my budget of ~$1500 USD) but have had trouble finding ones in my area that aren't sunburst (not a fan of sunburst).

The MIM Classic Players seem like a good option and I played some that felt/sounded similar to the AVRIs. I have a MIM telecaster that I'm very happy with so I'm not really opposed to getting a MIM. I know that the pickups and bridge are questionable in the CP Jazzmasters so I would get some upgrades if I decided to get that one (bridge upgrade, pick-ups, possibly trem system too). Since these guitars are more affordable than the AVRIs, I'd have more $$ to play with when upgrading.

BUT I read that a lot of the common upgrades to the CP don't just "drop-in." Is that true? Would I have to do some heavy modding (drilling) to put in upgraded bridge/pick-ups/pick guard/trem system? Has anyone done this?

Should I hold out and try to find the perfect AVRI?

Or do you think it would be wise/easy to get the CP and then do some upgrades down the road.

I also recently saw that Fender came out with a Troy Van Leeuwen sig. Jazzmaster that is MIM but has all the good upgrades. Thoughts on that?

Any help is appreciated--thanks!

I have been thinking the same thing lately.

You could also get one of these:

Probably best bang for your buck jazzmaster you can get out there. I have one and love it. I've been playing it for a little over a year now and it's fantastic. I'm not entirely sure about the pickups, but they're pretty similar to the vintage reissues I think. Anyways, you should try one for sure if you can, they're fantastic!
