I haven't had an electric for a while now as I was only using acoustic, my last was a cheap Squier Tele which I hated.

I was planning on buying a MIM standard tele. Here in NZ, that costs $1000 ($830us). However, I've just been given the opportunity to buy a 90s (not 100% what year at this point), made in Japan, sonic blue Mustang. This would cost me $800 NZ, so $660 US.

The type of music I enjoy playing is pretty varied, but mostly rock and alternative, and I don't really play any heavy stuff, no metal and such.

According to a few people I've asked, it's better to get an older guitar as they are better sounding compare to a new one, which I can understand.

Hoping someone can give me some insight on which instrument would be best sounding, and whether older is actually better, and whether or not the Mustang would be a good deal for me. Thanks.

Older isn't necessarily better. I would personally rather have the Mustang, but I prefer vintage specs.
