I recommend going to a music store or two and trying out everything in your price range.

Absolutely!
Now there are caveats if you want a specific model or only want to buy new but being willing to buy used (which isn't a bad idea in the least) will give you a lot of options to find an excellent guitar.

Try some Fender MIM models. Or just save up and get like a Gibson Faded model (which all cost around the $700-$800 range).

OR if you're exceptionally lucky, you could find a Gibson Faded model USED for around $300-$400.

And Epiphones are good guitars too, despite what everyone says, they really aren't half bad.

But MOST IMPORTANTLY, find something you like in your price range. Don't blow it on the first piece of art you see (boy do I know that mistake).

Hello MD29,

Like Chet says go out to the stores
and see how things feel to you.

The MIM standards are in your ballpark--$399
but for $449 you can get MIM standard
Factory Special Run {FSR} in Natural Ash
It's a good sounding great looking axe.

My 2 cents, Best of luck on your choice.

Cheers.

PS--Keep us posted
