Hello. I picked up a 1966 Fender Electric XII in November and have been really impressed. These things were designed from square one as 12-string instruments - they intonate properly, they stand up to concert tuning without warping or breaking, good string spacing enhances playability, and more. I've had a '93 Rickenbacker 360/12 for a while, and it does that one Harrison/McGuinn thing very well, but it has problems with the things I mentioned above as it's basically a 360 with a modified headstock and six extra strings crammed on. The Fender XII can do that one thing on the bridge pickup setting pretty well, so the Rick will go with few regrets, and thanks for all the jangle.

Meanwhile, I have two questions for the community. First, does anybody have or know of an owner's manual for the Fender Electric XII? Second, is there a modern case that fits this beast well? The body is similar to a Jazzmaster or Jaguar - would those cases work? The case for my XII is original and still protects the guitar well but it's pretty beat, especially the interior where I've had to glue the fabric back on. But whatever - the Electric XII is a wonderful instrument. Thanks again to Uncle Leo....

The body shape and size are indeed common to the Jazzmaster/Jaguar but the Jag is a short-scale neck. You might take a look at a JM case and see it there's adequate room at the headstock area to accommodate an original Electric XII. You might also find additional info on the G&G website.

You can find a lot of info on the EXII on the Offsetguitars.com forum. Also check out the *bay for the reissue cases...

Does anyone know why fender stopped making this model? Ive been looking for an electric twelve string for a while but Rickenbacker are freakin expensive and I trust Fender the most since Ive owned 4 fender products with no issues. I cant find any of these anywhere that don't cost 3000-4000 bucks. Does fender still make any electric 12 strings?

Fender's primary concern (as with all commercial enterprises) is making profits. And when one of their products doesn't sell in sufficient quantities to justify the expense, it's dropped. That's why the Electric XII was dumped -- after 1969 they couldn't give them away. So pay the three or four large for vintage piece. Or not. It really depends upon your persistence at wanting one. OTOH you can find used MIJ Strat XII's on the secondary market, usually for less than a grand.

Thanks for the tips. The Offsetguitars.com site does have wiring diagrams and other vintage info for the Electric XII, but so far no user's manual. The eBay guy ("largeal") still has a few new Electric XII cases available, but as of today his price is $249, which is a lot higher than Fender's price for a JM/Jag case (which may not fit a XII) and $40 higher than his own price for a previous lot of XII cases.

Still looking for a manual, so if you have more hints keep 'em coming.
