Hi all,

I want to put new tuning machines on my CIJ Jaguar--I have fallen in love with the locking tuners on my American Deluxe Strat and never did like the stock tuners on my Jag. I do use the whammy bar but not too forcefully--I am also aware that changing the mass on the headstock can affect tone--so I was hoping some of you might have suggestions for an acceptable (locking) replacement?

Thanks for any tips!

hipshot makes the best locking tuners, and the beauty is they can be installed without modifying your guitar via their Universal Mounting plate., no holes to drill and it is completely reversible, 18:1 gear ratio, you can order replacement buttons for them to match your guitar, I have a set on my guitar and they are awesome, they also have them in staggered posts to eliminate the need for string trees, I am not affiliated with this or any company, just a fan of how great these tuning machines are, check out their site and see for yourself,. hipshotproducts.com

Thanks for your reply--you have a set on your Jag or Jazzmaster? They will fit a CIJ jaguar?

I have an Epiphone SG, but they do have 6 in line configurations for Fender guitars, they also have the 8.5mm posts or the 10mm posts, they make sets that will fit Fender, you can call them and they can answer your questions better than I can, but the great thing is they can get you a set you can install without drilling any new holes and devaluing your guitar in any way, you can keep your original tuners in a safe place and if you ever need to sell your guitar you can put the original machines back on and it stays all original, here is their # Toll Free: 800-262-5630

yeah man no problem, they really are great machines, and it's a bonus to be able to install them without drilling on your guitar, the Universal Mounting Plate lines everything up perfect the first time, no guess work,. I almost never have to adjust my guitars tuning anymore, the few times I have contacted the folks at hipshot the customer service was excellent, good made in America company, I thought about Grovers, and Sperzels, but all the good things I read about hipshot I had to go with them and I am glad I did, they aren't really heavy but they are solid and super tight, no post wiggle on mine at all, I never really cared too much about gear ratio before, but i must say that the 18:1 ratio makes fine tuning super easy, ImageImage yes i know i NEED to wipe the smudges off my guitar before I snap a pic, this is just to show how they look on my crappy SG that I have upgraded into being an excellent guitar, nothing original on it except for the neck and the body, everything else is top notch, some would say it is a waste of money to upgrade such an inexpensive guitar but she deserved it, and it was all done over the last few years one upgraded at a time, the guitar played as good as any expensive guitar, great action it just feels right, so I made it an everyday player with expensive aftermarket parts, DiMarzio pickups, Tusq XL nut, Mighty Mite Roller Bridge, push pull for coil splitting, and a mini toggle for out of phase tones, Orange drop caps, Hipshot locking tuners etc..

Sounds like a great guitar--I am doing the same thing with my Jag--Just put some Curt Novak handwired pups in, got a staytrem bridge and plan on new nut and maybe a fret shave--depending on how adventuresome I am I may attempt a new wiring config as well. Some guitars sound and play great to begin with, others have potential waiting to be explored--I like making good guitars into great guitars.

I have studied solid body electric guitars for many years now, and my conclusion is the wood doesn't matter once the guitar is amplified, the fact that I say this really upsets alot of people,( not looking for an argument here ) The pickups and players technique is where most of the sound of an electric comes from, the rest is strings, nut, bridge, pots, caps. etc. I even have a plywood guitar that sounds awesome, I don't put any stock into the body material a guitar is made of, This SG sounded ok but was lacking a certain agressiveness when I bought it, the stock pickups left alot to be desired,. I originally had installed Bill Lawrence L500's in it, Problem was they were microphonic, so I exchanged them for a set of DiMarzio D-Activator X pickups, I liked the L500's a bit better but the DiMarzio's sound good as well, The coil split was a must for clean tones cause these DiMarzio pickups are hot and will push a clean amp into clipping, I spent more on this guitar than it is worth and that is OK with me, It sounds better than some Gibsons I have played, It all boils down to how well the guitar is made, some are made better than others that goes for expensive and budget models, If you like it play it, If it sounds good play it, If you like swapping pickups and parts, get a cheap guitar and go to town, the results may just suprise you in a good way

Phillip123...you might want to try these. They will fit exactly as the Ping tuners in your guitar now, they will even look correct to original. Kluson tuners are very good.
