Greetings,

On my AVRI Jazzmaster I get a lot of treble roll off when I reduce the volume control. I'd like to be able to set the amp for distortion then roll down the volume for clean, but below 8 or 9 it just sounds dull. Having done some research on the web, I understand the reasons for this now (see http://www.guitar-mod.com/rg_diag_treble_bleed.html for an explanation).

Some options are what's known as treble bleed circuit mods, but I'm thinking it might be easier to just replace the tone control with a TBX or the new Fender no-load tone control.

Anybody here modded their Jazzmasters and achieved success with any of these options?

Tone control ( pot ) have nothing to do with low volume loss frequency . It is when you have low volume output.
IMO you have to try this resistor and capacitor on the volume control if it do the job for you.
Easy if you know how to solder and cheap to do.

The very reason many play with volume and tone wide open and control the tone with their amp. I think there is a mod on the StewMac website for the Volume pot that should work for most guitars. (the do show it on a LP though.)

I can set the amp treble abnormally high for when the volume knob is down. Then when I turn the volume knob up, I can turn the tone control way down, like to 3 or 4. It's just that it's hard to change both knobs when I need to make a quick change, like coming right out of strumming into a solo.

I implemented what's known as the "50's wiring" but it didn't make a difference for this problem. It did, however, improve the tone of the both-pickups-on setting; it has a nice chime now in that position that I didn't hear before.

One thing that makes a huge difference is quality of your instrument cable.

It's the capacitance of cable together with a serial resistance in volume pot(when turned down) that create a low pass filter. Not entirely, input impedance of amp as also a factor, though.

Think this way: half way turned down linear pot - there will be a resistance from one end terminal to mid terminal - that is in serial with signal that drives capacitance of cable+amp.

Otherwise the treble bleed stuff works, I made it on other guitars but JM AVRI. I've had some change in low end as well though.

Best way I found was to use a multiple turn trim pot as resistance(wire as variable resistance with one terminal to middle) together with a cap. Then you can dial in exactly until you hear no difference in highs when turning volume down on guitar.

Otehr solutions are a little high impedance input preamp right at guitar jack, that has a low impedance output. This will make high end loss history as well. But even a cable down to floor stomp pedals is enough to create the problem. It has to be right at guitar jack output.

As I remember the 50's wiring is letting pickup enter at mid terminal of pot, and let end terminal go to amp. Problem with that wiring is that you create a variable load of passive pickups, and you will loose tone there instead depending on pickups internal impedance.
