I would have guessed bad nut slot (too deep---or incorrectly angled) but yeh not winding correctly could do it i suppose.

All the other helpful replies notwithstanding, and just my own personal observation....if someone is talking about a single string buzzing......as opposed to all of them or some of them........that would pretty much take away most of the problems (truss etc) mentioned and limit the problem to that string and its function. From the tuning key, to the String tree (if it touches one) to the nut and to the bridge.
When a SINGLE string buzzes open, my experience is that 99% of the time it is a nut slot cut too deep, angled badly, or just a bad string.

That's my one cents worth. You can use paypal to pay me. ;O)

All the best,
rob

So one might think.
I have one guitar that buzzed horribly, but almost only when the D string was played. If touching the D string, the noise was gone. I restrung it several times, checked the bridge and machine, and it seemed to help but then the buzz was back. I was stumped, until I was tuning one day and noticed that the buzz grew and diminished as I adjusted the D string. From there, it was easy to figure out. The frequency of a deep D resonated with the truss rod, and made it buzz. Restringing and adjusting the bridge immediately seemed to help, but that was because it would put it out of tune. Once I tuned it back up, the buzz was back too.

I'm gonna put that one in the same category as the OP's Arth1----anomoly and extremely rare. But admittedly, anything is possible.
So, I'll edit and disclaim a bit and say "in most instances"
Cheers,
rob

I have a 1995 Strat who did the same thing . I ad to tighten and loosen regularly truss rod nut to eliminate the buzz.

For the first two months I need to work with truss nut almost each week to stop the buzz .
Now since about 7-8 years, no more buzz.

I know how to do a complete set up and have all basic tools from Stew Mac.

I bough this guitar second hand in 2005
