I was wondering if fender is going to reissue another kind of mustang such as the 69 competition or the 70's sunburst and natural finishes.

It's more of a question of whether or not they will IMPORT them. They still make the competition Mustangs (w/ matching headstock) in Japan, as well as the daphne blue, olympic white, and candy red w/ contour. Hopefully they will make them available stateside, or at least to special order. I would love that.

I have a 78--and while many people deride late 70's Fenders--mine is a gem.

In a way I hope they don't reissue them or import them--makes mine rarer.

In another way I hope they do--share the fun.

yours is a 78 and will never become any less rare. you can also have comfort in the fact that yours is American made while the reissues are mostly Japanese or Mexican and I highly doubt that Fender will ever again issue an American made Mustang as most folks wouldn't want to fork over that much cash for a Mustang UNLESS it is vintage. Not to mention that the reissues use different woods for the bodies, so they have a different tone than your 78.

I should have used the "tongue in cheek" smilie--but there isn't one.

I know new Mustangs wouldn't make mine less rare int sense that it's a 78--but it's not as valuable as a 60's Mustang either. Still overall if there are fewer Mustangs...

(Then again I do have a Les Paul--one of the 2 most common types of guitars.)

I wasn't completely serious.
And my Mustang was fairly cheap back in the day.

As far as rare Mustangs go, I would like to see a reissue of the late 70's mustangs that had a maple fretboard. I've had the opertunity to play one, and it was such a nice neck.... our local GC aquired it and sold it for like $1700!!! Couldn't afford it, but at least I got the chance to play one in my lifetime!

I saw one for $1100.

It's actually the twin of mine--in a way.

When I bought mine the store had 2 Mustangs--a sunburst with a maple fingerboard and a brown one with a rosewood fingerboard. I didn't like the brown finish, and I prefer rosewood over maple. SO the store offered to switch the necks--and I took the sunburst with rosewood. The brown with maple looked odd--but sold shortly after I bought mine. Then in about 89 or 90 I saw the other one in a music store--and then I saw it again a month or so ago. I checked the serial number on the neck--and it matches the serial number on my Mustang's body--so it's the twin.

Vintage Mustangs in good condition are very rare because people were hacking them up to modify them especially when Grunge got popular. I had a '71 in sunburst (rare at the time because Fender was pushing the Competition model with the bright colors and racing stripe) with pearloid p/g that I had my local guitar shop order from Fullerton. To replace it today would set me back $1,700+. The last one I saw on eBay listed a Buy It Now price of $2,500. It was in really great condition, but that's outta my league.

I'd like to see the late '60s/early '70s models reissued.
