I have a '65 Jazzmaster that was disassembled in the early '80s. All the pieces have been sitting in the case since then. I'm looking to rehab it, but, laying the pickguard up against the body to line it up, it appears the pickguard has shrunken, or somehow become distorted!

Am I crazy? What's up with this? I saw an unrelated post that referred to a shrunken pickguard. What to do? Will a replacement line up with the screw holes?

You're not crazy so relax. The original nitrocellulose pickguards all had a tendency to shrink with age -- it's the nature of the material, not a manufacturing defect or anything within your control. A repro pickguard *should* line up with the body's existing screw holes. Save the original part for "posterity" of course.

Yes, they do shrink. I have a 1964 Strat and the mounting screws go in crooked because of the shrinkage, but it holds okay.

I suppose because it wasn't on the guitar, it could have shrunk way too much to mount. Can you put the screws in at angles?

Thanks for the replies, folks. I'd say the thing is unusable - It really shrunk bad - I can only see about half the screw holes, and it really doesn't line up tight.

Who are the best online vendors for these kind of parts? Allparts? Angela? I'll need other stuff as well.

Angela Instruments sells genuine Fender parts. You want to keep your instrument as brand-original as possible. Steve is a good guy who'll work with you to see you get the right stuff. I buy from him regularly.
