So, a little background: I'm actually a drummer first and foremost, and been playing for about 4-and-a-half years. I really love the drums, but I don't find them to be very expressive, so I've been wanting to learn the guitar. I currently have an Epiphone SG, but I don't have any strings to put on it. Anyway, yesterday, I went to my local music shop and tried out some different guitars. I tried a Gretsch, a Jackson, another Epiphone (a Dot), and some other Squiers; but the first one I picked up was the Mustang. And it felt so... right. Y'know? I also really loved the tone of it. So, do you guys think I should get this guitar when I have the money?

Why can't you put strings on the epiphone. If you want the Mustang buy it, but it will eventually need strings too.

Like I said, I don't have any strings to put on the SG.

Believe it or not, the same place that will sell you the Mustang will sell you strings to put on the SG. Yeah, you gotta be a drummer.

What would happen if I went to a drum forum, and said I had a set of drums, but no drum sticks. But I went to the store and saw a set of drums I liked - should I buy them?

Err. Does not compute.

Since the SG can apparently never be played again for the rest of eternity, feel free to ship it to me. I'll give it a nice home. :D

I have literally no money. Not even enough for a guitar pick.

A set of strings is 10 bucks a Squier Mustang is about 300 bucks. I'd get the strings, but then again I'm not a drummer.

Yeah, tough economy. I can't offer an informed opinion on the Squier Mustang, but if you really loved the guitar that much, then I think you should go for it. The obvious solution would seem to be trading the stringless SG for the Mustang. If it turns out to be a turkey, you can always upgrade the electronics, or sell it or swap it later. And if you do buy it, we expect a NGD post with pictures.

You might like the short 24" scale, Mustang, so go for it, why not.

Take the Epiphone in to the music store and ask them to evaluate it for a trade towards the Squier. Chances are they'll string it. Then you can try both, side by side.

If you do get it be careful if you get a sunburst model. I played one today and there were visible knots all over the wood that really turned me off from the guitar.
