It those Teiscos got rid of the white plastic on the headstocks, they'd actually look pretty cool.

Blasphemy!

That's part of their mystique.

Back to the Marauder: some of the stories don't make sense. They talk about licensing rights, but I see that the Patent was granted to Leo.

Another catalog snafu was the bound, block inlay Strat neck that never materialized.

Actually, there were a handful produced. I saw one in Oly White on Ebay about three years ago (totally documented as authentic). And within the pages of Tom Wheeler's book "The Stratocaster Chronicles" you'll find a photo of Ry Cooder playing a sunburst '66 (modded with a P90 in the neck position).

I knew I had seen that photo of the Marauders before somewhere..."The Fender Book" by Bacon & Day. According to the authors, the picture did make it into the 65/66 catalog but the guitar was ultimately not put into production due to a dispute with the owner of the patent for the pickups underneath the pick guard with CBS. They also commented that it was quite rare for a guitar to get to the catalog level and then be pulled or never put into production. As Fender Sales and the R&D department were different entities there may have just been a bit of lack of communication between them. Since there was a dispute over the pickups and CBS corporate offices being at a different local may have lead to this issue. At least according to Bacon & Day...fairly respected authors of Fender books.

Gene Fields who worked in Fender R&D during this time interviewed about the guitars by Guitar Player in 1991 said they did build eight prototypes four with slanted frets and three with more standard pickups and they never got any excitement about them when they were field tested, so they ultimately pulled the plug.

FWIW

Yeah, but it seems that Leo Fender held the patent. You can find a copy online. So the story is confusing.

Thanks for that info.

Right, the bound, block inlay Strat neck never materialized.

DUH......

You're right. They were Strats with white binding only -- no MOP blocks, merely standard dot inlays.

My bad.

Orvilleowner...hmmm...strange in the book they say the guys last name was "Freeman" so maybe that was part of the dispute? If Leo held the patent maybe this guy was challenging it and CBS didn't want the hassle of fighting it? The world may never know. Interesting bit of Fenderology though!

Perhaps Fender was following Rickenbacker back in the 60's by offering a slanted fret model. Rickenbacker's wasn't successful so maybe Fender scraped the idea before they put it into production.

Do you remember the Japanese made guitars from the '60s (before they got the idea to copy American guitar models)? Some of those had loads of controls.
Sorry for not getting back on this sooner, life has been hectic lately. No, I'm not quite old enough to remember them from when they came out, but I've been seeing them now and then here on the forum. I recall a couple of forumites buying a couple of them recently. In fact, I've got to say these

Not mine. Photos were purloined from an Ebay listing some year back.
