I ran across this picture of the original Fender Marauder which never got beyond the prototype stage.

Also check out the guitar with the slanted frets. I don't think those ever got issued.

That surely looks like a discarded catalog photo that got left on the editing-room floor......

It may have been in a catalog. The wikipedia page on the Marauder says that prototypes were shown. They seemed to jump the gun quite a bit in the '60s.

The Marauder was to be a cross between the Strat and the Jaguar. One is a non-trem, one has the Strat trem. Different knobs on them.

What is the thing on the left side of the picture? Is that black thing a big switch?

I wonder if the slanted frets are on a Jaguar or another Marauder?

It's actually a long knob, but it's not on a Marauder, it's on an Electric XII. The picture was taken from the book Electric Guitars: The Illustrated Encyclopedia, page 75, on which you can see the whole thing. (If you ever wanted a book that will give you non-stop GAS, this is the one. :D )

It's too bad they cut off the Marauder on the lower right (the one with the slanted frets), it was from 1966, and instead of having pickups hidden under the pick guard, had 3 Strat-style pickups, including the slanted bridge pickup, and even more switches.

Just to clarify, a lot of the pictures in the book do appear to have come from old catalogs.

I understand, but my point is, that photo was never in a catalog.

I have a complete set of originals spanning 1963/64 through 1971 -- that pic is nowhere to be found. Which in and of itself is not surprising since the Marauder would never see production.

It looks to me like Fender Sales, Inc was hedging their bets as they began to assemble the 1966/67 catalog but FMI management had not yet made a decision regarding the Marauder's future. Thus, they shot a layout of the prototypes in the studio along with Fender's existing line.

That was a reasonable hypothesis, Arjay, but let me elaborate. In the uncut picture, there are also 3 Jaguars to the right of the Marauders. According to the caption in the book, this picture did actually appear in Fender's 1965/1966 catalog, even though the Marauders never actually went into production.

Here we go, I found a link to the original picture. http://www.wikicure.com/tikiwiki/tiki-i ... r-Marauder

Thanks for the info, Spacewolf.

I checked out that book on Amazon. The guitar with the slanted frets was a model 2 Marauder (at least that's what people call it).

I played a bass with the slanted frets and it wasn't that noticeable. It was easy to adapt to, but on a guitar if I was playing chords, I'd notice.

I'm happy to be able to share. And that model 2 Marauder had more controls than a Jaguar!

Do you remember the Japanese made guitars from the '60s (before they got the idea to copy American guitar models)? Some of those had loads of controls.
