Hi all, just wanted to get some opinions about what to many of you will probably sound like a minor problem. I just received a '62 JM from the Custom Shop, which, unfortunately arrived with a scratch on the Fender logo. Nothing major, but a bit of a bummer nonetheless to have on a brand new guitar. I called Fender and they directed me to an authorized Fender CS repair shop in my area. They took pictures and documented the whole thing for Fender, and CS sent a new decal two weeks later. As waterslide decals applied over the finish scratch easily on these vintage replicas, the repair shop offered to clearcoat over the new decal to protect it from future damage. I'm now kind of having second thoughts about replacing the decal though. Does replacing a decal on a CS guitar and adding more spray to the finish devalue the guitar significantly? Will the color of the body and headstock (matching) "age" differently in a noticeable way? Is it worth going through the trouble just for a scratch? Anyone else dealt with this problem? Thanks for any advice.

Only you can say whether it's worth the trouble.

If everytime you look at the peghead shivers run down your spine, then you want to correct it.

So far as devaluation is concerned, it's gonna be 10-20 years at least before this correction affects the value in any way. Also, consider what other 'battle scars' it's bound to accumulate over that time. A peghead sticker scratch is likely to be insignificant.

If repaired correctly, it will supposedly look 'normal' anyway and not raise any suspiscions. So long as you retain all the documentation both from Fender and the Fender Authorized Repair Center, incl. dates, to show the Buyer, it 'explains' the correction/modification and won't devalue the instrument.

cheers!

I can understand the urge to clear coat the Fender Logo if you decide to have it replaced. However IMHO if you clear coat the logo then the guitar will not be 'period correct' and could effect the value down the road as LM has said.

It's your guitar. Do with it as you damn well please and stop being a pansy and worrying about resale value. It's a guitar, not stock. You might as well keep it in its case and never take it out. Play the thing like Leo would want you to.

I'd say you need a whole new guitar, OO!

I'll be happy to take that "damaged" kindling off of your hands for a nominal sum though.
