Hi all,

I'm new here; I'm hoping that you knowledgeable Fender players can help me repair a beautiful guitar I've just picked up off ebay--a gorgeous Korean-made sunburst Showmaster.

Image

It was sold "as is" with some drop-damage on the bottom. It's a nasty ding that has displaced the finish about a millimeter out from the body.

You can see on the second picture that the finish is bulged outward were the damage has occurred.

My questions are these: 1. can anyone tell me what KIND of finish these would be? Is it a poly finish, or is it lacquer-based?

2. Is it best to do the "super glue" repair trick on this? Should I try to sand down the "bump", or just leave it as is? Is there any way to actually fill the ding-depression? Can you do this with superglue? Or can I use a hi-gloss lacquer?

I have to say, also, that I'm a pretty accomplished scale modeler--I do all kinds of car models with high-gloss finishes, and am pretty good at polishing out finishes with micro-grit sandpaper and polishes, so I know how to get around that step. What I need to know though is what I'm dealing with as far as the finish itself. Can anyone help?

I've got a die-cast '65 Impala for you to re-finish -- it's currently Mist Blue Metallic and I want it repainted in Madiera Maroon.......break out that airbrush!

Nice!

I have both of the '71 Mustangs from Danbury Mint -- the Mach 1 in Acapulco Blue and the Boss 351 in Pewter. Probably the best die-casts they ever made.

Rawk on!

Yeah, the 71's rock hard!

Mine were built from the old AMT Kits. Pretty old lumps of plastic, they are, unfortunately. Lots of re-working on both of these models. The front end needs to be completely re-worked and a spoiler added from scratch. The air intakes have to be drilled out and front reflectors added. Quite a bit of work, but when you gotta have one, you gotta go that extra mile!
Here's my "Heavy Metal Boss"---the 350 Boss in black and silver.

Righteous!!!

I knew a fellow back during my AF days who owned a '71 in that exact color scheme -- beautiful job on yours.

Here's my Testors diecast '71 Mach 1......

I fixed what I could but metal cars are a little less "permissive" as to what can be done to correct any inaccuracies.

Hold on there! You gotta give us (okay, well, me, at least) a little more detail on what you did.

Did you remove any of the old, chipped clear coat?

You didn't have to apply any color to it?

No sir, no color and nothing removed. I put thin superglue into the cracks, and then pressed down on the one piece that was lifting up on the bottom. It "snapped" back into place; I couldn't believe it. Then I added some layers of thicker superglue, and used accelerator to freeze it. Next step was a single-edge razor blade. I drew it across the proud bump of superglue until it got leveled out. Some really fine sandpaper was then used with a small block to sand it even, and progressively smaller sizes go it smooth. Lastly I used NOVUS Plastic Polish and some good ol' elbow grease to polish to a high shine. Total time elapsed; about an 1.5 hours. :D

The red is a nice counterbalance to my '70 Torino GT in Grabber Blue......

I also built one in Calypso Coral.

BTW, that NOVUS polishing compound is excellent stuff -- I never thought to use it on a guitar finish to buff out imperfections.

Thanks for the tip!
