In the old days if the pickguard was too long you would just cut it down.

In the old days, raised pickguards also tended to be made from bakelite, because the plastic of yore was too soft.
Attempting to grind/sand down plastic that melts with friction is not nearly as easy as bakelite.

I tried this guitar out recently and I loved it ..can't wait to pick one up. I have no complaints and certainly not about the placement of the control knobs. At least these knobs are well out of the way while strumming or picking unlike the volume knob on a Stratocaster which is right there for your strumming hand to whack each and every time  I actually like these pickups even better than the DeArmonds that I have on my 1968 Harmony H75 guitar...the Fender pickups have a bit more articulation to them at least to my ears...I also prefer having the longer scale of 21 frets over the 18 frets on the harmony and a flatter radius at that. I have to say the guitar I played was fabulous and the craftsmanship was excellent but again I'm a player so it doesn't really much matter to me where Its made.. long as It can get the job done and feel good in the hands that are playing it.

I have the CAR one and I really like it 9.5" neck radius and the pickups are made in Korea, same factory as the Gretsch Filter-trons

Seems the more important issues would be PUP spacing & Bridge placement if your just comparing this to the originals. Of course it all comes down to players preferences and tone...I haven't seen one in person yet, but they look really tall across the face and maybe heavy.
