Hello

I would like to buy a new guitar, but I'm not shure wich one is the best for me. I play jazz, but also rock, punk, ska etc. First I was thinking about buying an archtop guitar because I really like the warm and round sound of it to play jazz, but a hollowbody is in my opinion not a good guitar for rock, punk and ska. So is there anybody who knows a guitar that I can use in jazz and also in rock, punk, ska etc.? A Fender Starcaster would have been perfect I think, but unfortunately they stopped the production of this guitars and they are really rare.

grtz

Have you considered a Fender Jazzmaster?

Yes I have and I watched videos on the Fender website of jazzmasters, but I'm not really convinced. They don't play jazzstandards in the clean mode so I don't know how it would sound of there is jazz played on a jazzmaster. Maybe I should try it myself in the shop. Another reason why I'm not convinced is because I read that a jazzmaster was originally built as a jazzguitar, but that fender failed in their intent and that it rather attracted surf-rockplayers than jazzplayers. Did you once played jazzmaster?

Very much yesyesyes to that.

Traditional jazz with traditional sounds has been played (successfully) with Teles, Strats and probably with every kinda Fender ever made. But your own preferences are the key factor here.

If you're "locked" on that hollowbody idea, try out a Thinline Tele - switch on the neck pickup and roll back the vol & tone for jazz, use both pickups and boost it with an overdrive/distortion pedal for rock, let the bridge pickup twang handle that ska-department and so on.

And BTW (haven't tried it yet, but) the Modern Player Jazzmaster HH specs seem to fill your expectations perfectly.

Give the Classic Player Jaguar Special HH a test drive.

The upper pots fade between single/humbucker/single on each pickup. If you can't find an appropriate tone, try a different picking technique.

Fender Japan made a D'Aquisto-designed guitar in the late-80s/early 90s that was quite good. Many jazzers have used Teles over the years, esp. some who veer away from the trad sound (Campilongo, Scofield, Frisell, many others). I play jazz, but not exclusively, and like the JM for that sound, finding the switch in the back position very useful (It is basically the same as dropping the tone control halfway and using the front pickup with the switch in the 'forward' position). A Strat shouldn't be overlooked either, I have to be honest, between the 335, Jazzmaster and the Strat that I have (Deluxe AmStd w/gold Laces), the Strat gets the best pure jazz tone...The big body jazzbox does rule, but it really is in the fingers.

You might also consider what amp might contribute to achieving the jazz sound your looking for in conjunction with guitar...do some internet searches regarding the subject...for example: http://www.jazzguitar.be/jazz_guitar_amps.html

Give a listen to Quentin Warren play his Fender Stratocaster with the great Jimmy Smith ... sounds pretty jazzy to me!

Tone is in the fingers, my friend ... and jazz is about style, not gear! :D

Looks like your in luck. Fender just reissued the Starcaster along with the Coronado. Looks like you can get one for less than $700.00.

I use my American Std. Tele to play jazz pretty successfully. You get those warm tones with pretty much every Fender guitar by switching to the neck pickup and rolling off the tone.

First and foremost, Jazz is another dialect in the language of music. As you master the vocabulary, voice patterns, and subtleties of technique, you can play Jazz on any guitar. My personal preference is the sound and response of hollow bodied guitars with P-90s thru a tube amp. My guitars are strung with a variety of string types. I do not hesitate in taking up anything at a jam or gig. As noted before, it is in the fingers and attitude.

But actually I never said that the gear makes you a jazzplayer. In my orginal post I wrote that I like archtop guitars because of their warm sound to play jazz. Maybe I was a bit unclear, what I just wanted to say is that I'm searching a guitar with a warm sound but that also has the possibility to have a sound with more treble. Now I have guitar with little possibilities, when I only use the bridge pickup the treble is extremely high and when I only use the neck pickup the sound is extremely dull. It is a Tanglewood TBS500, very badly intonated. Actually I bought this one because I thought it would have lots of possibilities notwithstanding that it has a very unique sound when both pickups are used.

It depends on the style of jazz--some of Jeff Beck's stuff is at least Jazzy--it is at least fusion.
And some of that was played on a Strat.
