Okay, I love the look of my Modern Player Jaguar. But that finish is a problem. How do I un-sticky it? I'm thinking of just hitting it with a non trivial coat of carnuba wax. Better options?

Hi,
Ahhhh.... the old sticky neck situation....
I have a Classic 50's Tele also with the gloss poly finish on the neck....

It doesn't bother me too much but I also would like some suggestions from folks experience...
Ive not heard of the wax solution, but have heard many speak about 'rubbing' the back of the neck down with very fine glass paper....

Any other good workable solutions out there?....

I'm not sure wax is a great idea. I've done it by accident (or, rather, by just not stopping) on another guitar. It worked but I don't know if it makes things worse when it wears off.

Knock the gloss back a little with some very fine grade sandpaper, or with a green scotchbright pad. Sand the neck gently in a circular motion. This wil reduce the stickiness. Do this gently and with extremely fine grade abrasives; this will allow you to polish the neck back up to a high shine if you need to go back.

I have used the green scrub pad with success. It does not take a lot of effort to get the neck to feel fast. My acoustic/electric bass felt like the neck was grabbing my thumb before a light scratching. :D

I tried this after watching this Youtube Video:

+1, but I'd not use sandpaper of any sort - you want something that is flexible when buffing out the clearcoat on the back of the neck. I've used the green Scotchbrite pads one can buy at the hardware store. I cut a piece the size of my palm, and gently ran it up and down the back of the neck - in the areas where my hand would naturally slide. It's amazing how the shiny gloss finish on a guitar neck will stop one's hand (the Video is right on about this), yet a little buff job with a scotchbrite pad, makes the neck feel super smooth and friction free. It almost gives it a satin finish.

I tried to get my buddy to try it on his $2600 LP, but he chickened out! Try it out on a guitar you're not worried about, and you'll be amazed at the before/after difference. I did this on my Fender Pawn Shop 51, a PRS solo 1, and my old crusty trusty washburn hb30 - all with spectacular result.
