Hi I'm new here, and had a question about my Jazzmaster. It is incredibly hard to bend strings. Actually all the strings bend fine except the high e. I can bend it up a semitone, but when I bend it up a full tone, I have to stretch it really far, and the string snaps almost every time. I think it may be the tremolo making bending so difficult, but I'm not sure. Any recommendations. Has anyone ever blocked off a Jazzmaster trem before? It's an old '64 if it's any help.
Thanks,
Mike

What string gauge are you using?

Lighter gauge strings exert less tension when tuned to pitch -- thus, they're easier to bend.

Hey Arjay,
I thought that may be the problem too, until I strung it with 9s, reintonated it, and the same thing happened. Is there a way to block off the term like on a strat for when I need to play more lead which would involve bending.
Thanks,
Mike

Blocking a trem has nothing to do with strings snapping. And in any case, if you engage the trem lock, it fundamentally accomplishes the same goal.

Where is the breakage occurring?

The breakage occurs at about the point I fret at. Or at least I think so because when I take the string off it is usually in about 2 equal pieces.
