Hey, I'm kinda new to this forum. But I have been playing guitar for a few years now, and have been looking into buying a Fender guitar as an upgrade from my current electric, and Epiphone LP. I play a lot of rock, mostly classic, but am into all kinds of other music. I am looking into the Jaguar and Telecaster models. I am just wondering what each sound like, and what they are good for? Also, I have heard that the Jaguar bridge is kind of finicky, as well as the trem system. Is this true? And how do each sound overall, as well as the pros and cons?

Well, all I can tell you about are teles, having never even played a Jag. I do like short scale guitars, and the Jag has that going for it. They often play as well with heavier gauge strings as do regular fenders with, say 10's. I have both my Duo Sonics set up with 12's... there's no string bending party going on but they play and feel great... and the tone is killer. All I know is that when I think of a Jaguar, I think of either Kurt Cobain or surf music... and I'm sure that they can produce tones fit for many more styles of music.

As far as characterizing the tele... the "classic" tele tone is that snappy twang in the bridge but it's not a one trick pony. The neck, and the neck/mid combos sound fantastic, rich and full and suitable for everything from blues to rock to Jazz. Furthermore, you might consider a Humbucker in the neck and a regular pup in the bridge... even more tonal options. The vintage bridge design is not optimal but many people make it work just fine. The layout is clean and simple and intuitive (unlike the Jag). I mean, it's a 60-something year old design which has essentially remained the same... like the strat and les paul models, it's a classic which they pretty much nailed correctly the first time.

If it were me I'd go for a tele but I'm sure a jag would be fun too... the best thing to do is try them out at a shop and see what you think... you're hands and ears will steer you in the right direction. Here are my two telecasters. One is pretty basic and the other has some special wiring and pickup options.

I have one of each and love them both. If I had to live with just one, it would be the Tele. If I had to live with just the Jag (a modern player w/P-90's) depression would not result.

Now, Tele maple or rosewood neck. I like rosewood. Soundwise and aesthetically. 22 frets too. On any guitar.

This is a serious apples and oranges question.

check this out. short jaguar like scale, P90's, semi hollow, set neck.

the Seymour Duncan pickups are quite hot, but it sounds great. the only problem ive got, which is personal taste, is that the tone pots don't seem to cover a very wide range, so its difficult to get 2 distinct sounds from each pickup. they are different, but for example compare a strat bridge to neck pickup, theres a huge difference.

however it plays great, I think looks gorgeous (also comes in red or black stain) and sounds huge. I added the bigsby, usually has a std stop tail piece like a les paul. its Korean made, and therefor great value for money. its a JA-90 telecaster.
