It's all over the internet, as most guitar aficionados can attest--that Fender Mustangs supposedly won't stay in tune. I would have to make a qualified disagreement. I just happen to own a 2012 Kurt Cobain Mustang (Lake Placid Blue), and I've also owned a 1964 (Olympic White) Mustang--the one that got away, and that's why I just got another Mustang. I also have a Strat and Tele. I've been playing since 1968, so I didn't just fall off the turnip truck.

I think the Mustang is getting a bad rap and an undeserved reputation. Yes, while it is true that you may have to tweak it a bit more than a guitar with a stop tail bridge, unlike most players, I DO NOT think it's because the guitar has a bad tremolo/vibrato or a bad bridge.

What I am finding out is that the guitar is extremely sensitive to temperature changes. My den stays pretty cool, (about 68 F) which is where mine hangs. I took it down, tuned it, and within 10 minutes it was out of tune--and the strings are not brand new. I believe that simple body heat effects this guitar more profoundly than most guitars, and I believe it may be because of the Alder body--not that there is anything wrong with Alder! My Stratocaster and Telecaster are both made of Swamp Ash and don't seem to be nearly as affected.

So then, I believe that in order to get the most out of the Fender Mustang, temperature stability is must. It needs a chance to "warm up to you". I highly recommend this guitar. For the price you cannot beat the tone color you can get out of it and it gives both of my more expensive Fenders a run for its money, and is well worth looking into if you like Fender. I like to play a lot of 60's and surf type rock and for that, you can't beat it. It also does well for 80's alternative rock. Try one at your local Fender dealer and mess with it for a few minutes before you make up your mind. This little guitar will surprise you!

I have had a Mustang for many years now.
It' not modded at all, and I have never had this issue.

I have taken it out of the house in all sorts of weather and never had an issue with the temperature change.

In fact of all my guitars, it's the one that's needed the least tweaking and adjusting.
It was set up when I got it, and the thing still plays great.

So either I have the rare Mustang or my ear/sense of in tune is all shot.

I think it's more in the middle, but I love my Mustang.
