I've been recommended to go down a couple of gauges from a steel 12 to 10. I need to know if I can do this change as a complete set all at once or do I need to change a string and allow a couple of days for the neck to slightly adjust before changing another. I've been told ugly stories of necks cracking and snapping. Your experience is appreciated, I'm learning about these things. I have a T Bucket 300ce.

What I do is change them one at a time. Tune to pitch then move on to the next. No need to wait at all. Might take a day or two before your guitar stays in tune. If it's electric and you change string gauge you'll have to do a setup too.

Thanks for the advice. The T Bucket is an electro acoustic, I think it is classed as a dreadnought. I've had it a few months now and my teach has recommended going down a couple of gauges. Should help me with my strumming and phrasing. I can cope with 12s but they leave deep tracks in the fingertips. I just don't want the neck warping or cracking.

Hi,if you want to be correct, you can do the 6th then first, the fifth and second, etc... and no waiting .However due to to the fact that you are changing string sizes, ( what size were the original strings?) you may have to adjust the string length if possible.

Regarding a T-Bucket, the setup mentioned above means just adjusting the truss rod; you are changing to lighter strings so you need to loosen the truss rod a little.
Change the strings as mentioned above (in order LowE-highE-A-B-D-G or 6-1-5-2-4-3...), tune to pitch and loosen the truss rod 1/4 turn. Check the relief after a couple hours, adjust again if needed, check & adjust again the next day.

A good default relief for an acoustic would be .010" (0.25 mm). To measure it: put a capo on the first fret, press on the 14th fret, check the gap between the bottom of the string and top of the 6th fret. A set of feeler gauges is handy, and a must for a beginner.
