Hello all,

I've been asking a lot of questions lately due to having dug a collection out of the closet. I have this 3/4 scale Musicmaster neck with a neck plate seriel #63401. The plate suggests a '61 or '62, but the neck strangely has no date stamping on it at all. I'm not sure if the neck plate actually belongs to the neck, and I wonder how common it ever was to not have stamped the necks. I also notice that there is no trademark # on the headstock label. Can anyone offer any insights to this neck?

Feedback is much appreciated... thanks.

Again, I'm no expert on vintage Fenders, but here's something to read while you wait for the wizards to answer:

marcelroy on Fender's 3/4 scale guitars
Quote:
(On Musicmasters 1959-1964)
The maple necks were fitted with a "slab" rosewood fingerboard (milled flat on the bottom) with "clay" dot position markers. The truss rod could be installed through the top of the neck, prior to gluing on the separate fingerboard, so the "skunk stripe" route was no longer necessary. Since the rosewood board significantly strengthened the neck, thinner neck profiles were possible

jimshine's MM page
Your MM-neck seems to have the maple plug in the back of the headstock beside the 'no-name Klusons' (pic on the linked page).

Yeah, it's definately a slab board neck. Me being no expert either, I've not seen any Fender necks without any date stamp of any kind. The one pictured on jimshine's MM page has a sloppily hand written one, that's interesting. The only thing on this neck of mine is that handwritten "R". It seems there's no way to nail down a date on it. It does have the slab, and there isn't the patent # on the label, which might narrow it down pretty well for someone who knows things... unlike me.

Thanks, jmat... anyone else?

I doubt it's been re-varnished. I've had the neck for over 30 years and didn't do anything to it myself. It could have been before my acquisition, and that would explain things, but I would guess not looking at the overall look and finish of the neck. The marks on the heal are from being attached to a mod body poorly painted white 30 years ago, but it does have a dark sort of petina, I know what you mean. It could be...

Thanks for the idea...
