Well, I finished routing out the space for the toggle... while I don't think the custom shop will be making me any job offers soon, it did turn out relatively clean, and once painted, will look about as good as I'd expect it can. I still need to make a shallow channel for wires but I'm still figuring out what that's going to look like.

With a table router it should be easy enough to trench out a channel for the switches wires.

Got pics?

I have no table router... I used a dremel with the hand held extension. It works pretty well but takes a while. I'll get some picks up soon. I should probably invest in some tools at some point but I don't really have the space.

That's too funny... glad you found one that worked out for you. The '66 I ended up with may need a new nut... perhaps you made out better than I did!

I don't care how much work - That tint is worth it. If you ever decide to sell it or the finished product, PLEASE pm me.

Thanks! That would be great, but my own project right now is my jag.

My sister wants a REALLY yellowed olympic white, almost yellow, with red tort...

She's got good taste.

You're preaching to the choir, JG.

If I had room I'd have me a Shop Smith.

Well, I'm taking delivery of the red duo sonic body today... it's unlikely I'll have much time to mess with it given that I'm trying to put the finishing touches on my Masters and preparing for job interviews. I'm sure I'll have time to give it a polish and clean but probably no pics until next week.

Hey Arjay,

I've got a question for you... (or anyone else who wants to chime in)

The red duo sonic body arrived yesterday and there is a "C" stamped (as in pressed into the wood) between the two pickup cavities... any idea what it might mean? There is also an "04" & "02" stamped pressed into the neck pocket. I checked on the vintage Fender info site that we all know and love and it as far as I could tell, the neck stamps might have to do with the date. The body stamp is more confusing. I know they stamped special orders and refin orders and occasionally stamped the neck codes for width on the bodies (A,B,C) but it seems odd they'd stamp a "C" on a short scale given that at this time (late 60's) most if not all were using B width Mustang sized necks. Any thoughts?

BTW, the color is not anywhere near so bright as the picture but the flash went off on my camera. It's a very dark fire engine red. True to what I guess might be Dakota Red. Also, the routing job in the bridge pup cavity is not my handy work. I'll likely clean it up before applying the shielding paint. Also, the body seems a bit thinner than the white Duo Sonic I've been working on which is a bit odd but perhaps not... I'm not so experienced with these models of Fender and have no idea if/when the body shapes were altered throughout the life of the DS and MS IIs.

Here's a quick mock up I did as well... again looking far too hot red red. It's much more like a deep cherry/Dakota red.

The GFS lipsticks showed up yesterday and presented a problem... first, the mounting screws they sent were not the correct screws so I ran to the hardware store and grabbed some metric screws about the same length. Unfortunately, the screw length was too short, causing the pickup to ride very high up on the guard. I need to run the hardware store again for longer p/up screws and some bridge mount screws... the bridge I found is in spanky new shape but didn't include the original screws.

The new screws required more routing... I basically just took the bottom of the pickup routs down to the level of the upper control cavity, I'd guess another 1/4 inch.

Well, I finished up the routing yesterday and am working on getting the painting done today. As previously stated, the routing probably wont get me hired in the Fender Custom Shop but will get the job done. All I need to do now is get the thing wired up and mounted after the paint dries. Seems there's a little helper up in the corner of my shop above my bench... a plump little black widow. It's getting to be that time of year where I don't stick my hand anywhere without knowing exactly where its going... the shop is full of the darn things during the summer.

Paint is complete... time for wiring.

Can anyone see why this scheme wouldn't work? My only concern (so far) is the orientation of the pickups... having never used them and having no diagram for them included, I don't know I have them mounted correctly? Other than that it seems good to go but if anyone catches anything please let me know.

So because of the length of the bare ground wires, I'm going to remove them and just solder a piece of covered wire, given that it has such a long way to travel... I though about leaving the original and using heat shrink tubing but I don't have that much, and covered wire seems a better way to go.

Howdy ladies and gents...

Good news, she's all done! The wiring was a pain in the arse given that this was my first DS/MM/Mustang type project but other than that things went pretty smooth. There is a slight issue w/ the nut, however it's playable as-is and the action is actually stellar. It did require a neck shim and like many late 60's/early 70's Fenders the neck pocket is not as snug as it might be. I set it up with D'Addario 12's... the light jazz set. I great choice as far as I can tell.

What truly surprised me is how she's DEAD quiet... not even the faintest hum which was a pleasant surprise... I wasn't sure what to expect but it's by far the quietest single coil guitar I've put together. I'm not sure if it's the shielding paint or just a good wiring job.

The pickups sound cool... there's a cool jangle played clean and then they get pretty sweet sounding with some OD. The bridge pup is significantly hotter and sounded terrific with some OD & distortion added. I'll try to get a video made and posted so you can hear it. For now, just a little guitar porn to look at... thanks to all of you who've helped answer questions and point me in the right direction. I'm looking forward to sharing its evil twin with y'all once it's finished. Cheers, JG
