I took 2/3 of your advice... I like the black pup covers better, creme tip, but will probably opt for the black knobs too. Who knows... time will tell.

The parts are rolling in and I'll try to get some pics up soon... still waiting on the neck but I've got the tuners aged as well as the neck plate, knobs, and a bunch of screws. The body is pretty cool... a banana creme with lots of checking (despite being a poly finish) I used some of that automotive scratch doctor stuff to clean it up and it took a lot of the grime off as well as brought out a very nice luster... she's lookin' good. I disassembled the bridge (a vintage duo sonic) and cleaned and reassembled it too. I'm just waiting for the p/g, a few toggle switches, and the neck.

I also got the shielding paint and am waiting for the rest of the parts to come so I can size things up, then rout, sand, and paint the cavities.

Did you have the neck plate stamped with an age-appropriate serial number?

No, not this time, just a plain ol' "F" plate. I've done that with some strat and tele projects but I wanted to keep a lid on the how much I spent this time. It does add a cool heir of authenticity to a project though. I'm stoked with how well the knobs and tuners turned out... they look like "real" old knobs and tuners, at least to my eyes. They match the aging of the body pretty nicely.

Yikes... I'm in deep now. I just put out a low ball offer on a dakota red '66 body and what do you know... they took it. What to do now? I'm sorry, but weather checked 60's Fenders, regardless of the model, are just too much to resist for me right now. I'm in trouble folks... but am open to suggestions for my next project.

 That's a good one it'll actually be number five! although this'll be the only fire engine red one, the others are all heritage cherry in color. I'm kind of thinking about lipstick pickups for this one... I've never tried them before and think it would be in keeping with a more vintage vibe and GFS has some that are a relative bargain. Time will tell, looks like I've got my summer guitar projects lined up!

Here's a pic of the neck I grabbed for her. Seemed like a bargain at $225 w/ tuners. Frets look great and overall it's super clean.

$225 is a righteous price for such a nice piece. And the tuners and string tree are a bonus.

Ya done good!

Thanks, I know huh? I know it's a 70's Fender product so we'll see how she sits in the neck pocket. I'm coo using it on either body. I am truly amazed that these parts are still so affordable, especially the late 50's and 60's stuff... original finish bodies for Duo Sonic/MMs are between 200-350, and necks are about the same. The pre-CBS stuff is where the bargain is at IMO. Brazilian slab board necks, nitro finishes, "real" relic vibe and aged wood...

I think it's interesting that the Mustang and Duo Sonic (not so much the MMs) have never caught on with collectors or fans of vintage Fenders. I know they were "student" guitars and perhaps that's the reason why, but the "B width" 24" scale necks are sweet. I can see why folks don't like the 22.5 scale and A width necks... they feel pretty dainty.

+1

Aside from the 7.25" fretboard radius and smallish fretwire, they're not much different than the feel and vibe of a Gibson.

You got the duo-sonic neck! I was eyeing that neck, that tint... It sold the day I got money.

I got this instead..

And for $200, I'm happy.

Speaking of student models, I have a project in mind... My sister want's a musicmaster. Really the last affordable vintage Fenders.

That's too funny... glad you found one that worked out for you. The '66 I ended up with may need a new nut... perhaps you made out better than I did!

In any event, I've decided on lipstick pickup (GFS) for the white guitar and I'm going to use the music master neck on it... a steal at $225 w/tuners. They're new tuners but the neck is in primo shape and for whatever reason, I'm going to use it on the white body. I'm getting ready to rout the body for the toggle... I used some adhesive shilding backing from Stew-mac on the p/g and it worked great... I also installed the SG-style toggle today and worked on aging the pickguard some. So far so good... I just need to figure out a routing pattern and get busy.
