Based on your Cobain it looks like the "U + 6 digits" may have been replaced by a new "J" style. Actually it kind of looks like Fender is trying to make the MIJ format come somewhat in-line with the USA and MIM format - to me I'm seeing maybe a "JO" for "Japan" (why "JO" - I suppose they wanted to use two letters since they use "US" for USA and "MX" for Mexico, or maybe the "O" signifies the factory that makes this model for Fender Japan since they use a couple of suppliers) followed by a "12", making the prefix "JO12" followed by the six digits for the actual serial number.

Yes, it has the contour in the hip section, and it came from an authorised dealer.

It's not a '65 RI (I think those are MIM??)

The serail number on my last Cobain Mustang started 'JD'

Sorry about that - the photo looked like a "JO" on my work computer's screen; now I can see it's a "JD" when I look at it here at home (better screen resolution). As I say I guess Fender's moving to using the "JD" on some of their MIJs. Everyone needs to update their product dating websites.

I looked at 2 new 65 Reissue Mustangs today, they are both made in Japan. I saw the serial number of TO3 ------ on both of them. I also purchased a Mustang Pawnshop and the serial number is TO1_ _ _ _. I hope that helps.

Interesting, thanks. On Fenders' Japanese dating page they quote the T serial number as;

Made in Japan T + 6 digits - 2007-2010

So does this mean the guitars you were looking at were at least 3 years old?

Fender has continued to use the "T" serial numbers on the MIJ Pawn Shop models (including the Pawn Shop Mustang Specials) and a few other MIJ models so at least the Pawn Shop one could be current. The other Mustangs could be a few years old or they chould just come from that same factory as the Pawn Shop Mustangs and the other models and Fender hasn't updated their page to reflect it.

Serial numbers have always been at best an approximation of year of manufacture throughout Fender's history.

According to the dealer, they received them in 2009 and 2010, so that would fit the years you describe.

A contour would suggest it is a '69 (like Kurdtz) and not a '65 RI.

The reason I ask about who you bought it from is because there has been Ebay users selling modded Mustang with Kurt Mods before they even officially released it.

When I bought my '65 RI in 2009 it was MIJ.

I'm not sure how this happened although I don't think it was new old stock.

Hopefully the new one is correct.

My 65 Reissue is also MIJ and the serial number start with JD

JD serials began in 2011 and relate directly to 'Japan' (country of origin) and 'Dyna' (the factoring company) .
The two digits immediately following the 'JD' prefix now refer literally to the year of issue: eg, JD 11****** denotes an instrument factored in 2011, JD 12****** in 2012, and so on, to date.
