I've been playing guitars since 1968. My first solidbody and first Fender was a pre-CBS Mustang (white with shell pickguard) which I got used in 1968. Not sure now if it was a 64, 65 or 66, but built somewhere in there. I was only 14 when I got it, but it forever changed my style and passion--I loved that thing! I've always been a big fan of surf music and it was perfect for that. Not only that, but the basic build of the guitar fit my small hands and diminuative frame perfectly. I liked the short scale thin neck and offset body--it was fast just like a Ford Mustang Cobra!

Unfortunately at the time I was subject to a lot of peer pressure. At the time the Mustang was considered a "student" guitar. That was before a lot of front-line artists hit big with it. I let it get away in my desire to trade up to the top of the line Fenders to compete with my friends, who were raving about Telecasters and Stratocasters.

And while I have loved my Jaguar, Telecaster and Stratocasters, I've missed that guitar--a lot! And for a long time they were hard to find! Surf music wasn't big in the late 60's, so to some extent I had to fall in line with the prevailing trend, and even for Hendrix, Cream, Vanilla Fudge, etc, it served me well for the pyschedelic period with fuzz and wah pedals. If you wanted to be in a band, you pretty much had to play what was in demand at the time.

I've broadened my style a good bit over the past few years and now have some other makes with humbuckers, but a while back I ran across a used 1972 Fender Mustang and decided to try it out. I was hooked again! But at the time I didn't want to cough up the cash for a vintage guitar. Nothing against vintage guitars, but if I'm going to put out good money, I want a warrenty too.

I looked at the Pawn Shop Series, the 60 Reissue, and the Squier version, and to be honest with you, it was a tough call--they were all good and all unique. I ended up settling on a brand new Kurt Cobain model, Lake Placid Blue with powder blue stripes. The build and attention to detail are absolutely perfect. I really liked the relief on the back side of the body and the Seymour Duncan Lead pickup really punched the power up. I liked the alder body which the Kobain models have. My tele and strat are both ash and are a bit heavy after a while. I really liked the resonance of the alder a lot too.

A lot of people knock the vibrato on the Mustang. I like it. Yes, you do have to pay a little more attention to keeping it in tune, especially with brand new strings, but that just goes with not having a solid tail piece. I get some of that on my Stratocaster too. I don't use it a whole lot but the advantage is that it makes bending strings much easier!
A Mustang is a Fender--so it's going to sound and act like a Fender. It's not going to sustain like a Les Paul, but it will give you a happy brightness that no Gibson ever can or will. It's called the Fender Sound!

I don't really get into Nirvana or too much of the really hard rock stuff, not anymore anyway. Heart is about as hard rock as I go. This guitar harkens back to good times for me playing the Ventures, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Paul Revere and the Raiders and that sort of thing where a bright, percussive guitar makes all the difference in the world. Some people have said it makes a better rhythm guitar than a lead guitar. Well, I think it does pretty well for both. So if you're looking for a topflight electric guitar at a very affordable price, get yourself a Fender Mustang!

I've been thinking of buying a Kurt Cobain Mustang or Jaguar myself (due to me being a huge fan of Nirvana) but they're too damn expensive over here in the eastern part of the world. A few days ago, I saw a Kurt Cobain Jag sell for around INR 104000 (US$ 2000).
