I am saving some money for a new guitar, but not sure which I like more. At the moment I own a 12 year old Fender Strat MIM with a rosewood fretboard. Thinking of buying a second Strat with better pickups and in the sunburst finish. Now I just discovered the new Fender Mustang pawnshop special with the special humbuck pickups and the shorter 24" neck. Great looking guitar!
Will this guitar fit my style of playing? I mainly play blues (well at least I am trying  ) and like a warm
sound and not that high tone coming from for example a Telecaster with single coil pickups.

Thinking of buying this Mustang instead of a Strat. I am looking for that warm characteristic SRV sound. Yes, I know, put heavy gauge strings on it. I play with a .010 set.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Buy some pickups for your strat and get the Mustang. Win/win. :D

It's really up to you and what you like playing better--but as for me, I just love Mustangs.

Starts are cool and all, but there's something I just love about a Mustang.

And the Pawn Shop Mustangs are nice guitars.

The Mustangs have a shorter scale neck, so the frets will be closer to each other? If you have big hands, these short scale necks will not be the best choice?

Let's just put it this way...if you like playing the blues...ask yourself, when have I seen BB King, Eric Clapton, Freddie King, Buddy Guy...etc., ever play a Mustang? Go with the Strat...and if money is an issue, you might consider a Classic Series 60's or 50's Strat, great guitars for the money.

Possibly.
I have good reach with my fingers, and a Strat is no problem to play--but I still love my Mustang.

So it's up to you to decide if it's a good fit or not.

Those are good choices--but a Mustang works well for the blues as well.
I love playing the blues on my Mustang.

And I'm not worried about who plays what guitar--but what guitar I like--so if it's a Strat--then it's a Strat--whether MIA or MIM or a Squier.

But don't disregard a Mustang simply because the guitar players T2Stratman mentioned and others play a Strat--BB King, Albert King and Freddie King played mostly Gibsons.
So, don't get a Strat because of that?

Nonsense.

But if it does matter I have seen pictures of Johnny Winter with a Mustang and a Duo-Sonic--although he mostly is associated with Firebirds, he has a played a wide variety of guitars.

In fact any guitar works for the blues--that's how versatile a music form it is.
Find your own sound and get the guitar (or guitars if possible later on) that best help you achieve that, and don't worry what others play--those guitars may suit them best, but may or may not suit you.

Scale is just the distance between bridge and nut. Fret spacing is no different. Humbuckers will give you the warm tone you want, the shape of the body makes no difference to the sound.

Fret spacing will be closer.

The Fender Mustang with the two humbuckers is a great looking guitar, but there is one thing I don't like about this guitar and that is the lacquered neck. Will have to test one in a shop to decide. Because of the specific designed electronics in this guitar it makes it a very versatile guitar compared to a Strat.
Still saving money and hopefully I can test one soon.

The Pawn Shop Mustang has two Fender Enforcer humbuckers... these are the highest gain hbs Fender makes. The Pawn Shop series guitars, as well as the Blacktop series, are admittedly made for modern aggressive hi-gain sound.

So given the two proposed guitars and your stating that you are a blues fan, I would go for the Strat. In the same price range as a Pawn Shop series MIM Fender, you can get an American Special Stratocaster with Custom Shop Texas Special pups.

Also, as a previous responder mentioned... you could always upgrade your old Strat with Custom Shop pups for around $200... then buy the Pawn Shop Mustang for your harder music.

Personally, I think that even if you are just an amateur hobbyist (like me), if you pick up a guitar to play at least a couple times per week it is worth having both a single coil guitar and a humbucker guitar!

Variety is always nice, at least I think so when it comes to guitars.

I would recommend you get new pickups for the Strat.

Check out this video review to see if you would want the Mustang Special:
