So I tried a new 2012 pawn shop mustang special today. Made in mexico and quite well made and I really liked the sound -- but this instrument would not stay in tune for longer than a minute or two once you do a few bends on it. It that normal for these models or maybe just needs a tweak? Would expect a little more considering its not a cheap model same range as a strat specal.

It should definitely stay in tune. I have one of the Japanese models from the first year and it stays in tune as well as any guitar that I have ever owned. I bought it from a guy who sets them up professionally. It just feels great and plays great.

I would do unforgivable things to get this in left handed.

As far as this going out of tune, I would restring the guitar correctly. The slotted tuners can be a little tricky to string if you're not used to doing them. There are numerous you tube videos that will show you how. It is very important to have the right amount of wraps on it, and to put the end down into the hole from the top, and bend it sharply around the post. From low E to high E, I like 3 wraps, 3 wraps, 4 wraps, 5 wraps, 6 wraps and 6 or 7 on the high E as the string length allows. Make sure you stretch the strings properly. On the B and high E I will stick the end down in the hole and then go around 1/2 of the post and back through the slot of the top of that post and then wind the rest as usual. That helps the skinnier strings to lock on the post better. Also, make sure that you use some nut lube or some graphite in the nut slots. Also, your nut slots might have a bur that will cause a string to stick and then release. Hopefully, this is helpful to you.
