Can't say for sure, but to me the Jag sounds more like a Strat, and the Jazz has a deeper tone almost like a baritone

I saw they had the same body type and thought the jazz might be lower because of the name and you confirmed it
thanks

Whoa!!!

Hold on there, Babalooey!

These guitars have the same body profile. Jag has a 24" scale--better for lead playing, it's thought. Jazzmaster has a 25.5" scale (same as Strat, Tele)--better for jazz-type chording, it's thought.

Jag has single coil pickups with a lot less windings than a Jazzmaster's pickups. This is provided that we're talking about vintage or currently-produced AMERICAN instruments...the Japanese Jags and Jazzmasters have very similar resistances in their pickups, because Japanese Jazzmasters are way underwound.

American Jazzmasters have a much thicker tone than Jags do, because of this difference.

The switching is a bit different, but not by much. The Jag has a slide switch setup for pickup selection, the JM has a typical three-position toggle switch that does the same. The dual circuits are identical except for this. Oh, and the Jag has a third slide switch that cuts in a capacitor to thin out the sound (as if it needs it!).

NOTHING sounds like a Jag. I've got several, and played through my Fender tube reverb and white Dual Showman, it NAILS the surf sound. Period.

For a good idea of what a Jazzmaster can do, I recommend the following album: "Wildest Guitar" by Mickey Baker (the "Mickey" in Mickey and Sylvia ("Love is Strange"). It's Sepiatone Cat # STONE 13.

This album was recorded in 1959 and it ROCKS.

Lets not forget that the bridge pick up and neck pickup in a Jazzmaster are reverse wound, so when you play them together effectively you're playing a humbucker. Ingenious design.

The pickups on a Jaguar are more like the strat, but have their own trebley sound. Jingle Jangle was right when he said nothing sounds like them.

I own both and play my Jazzmaster more, though the Jaguar is cool to have most of the time its a little too trebley for what I play.

Yep--I use my Jag for "that surf sound", but the JM has too much midrange for what I'm looking for...

I've got a japanese jaguar. once you wax-pot the pickups, it sounds very similar to the US one. it's about half the price and comes in cooler colors.

If you want another great example of the Jazzmaster tone, check out this clip of Television. Verlaine is playing his Jazz straight into a Vox and you really get to hear to tone of the Jazzmaster.

I think this will give you an idea of how versatile a Jazzmaster can be.

J. Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. uses original Jazzmaster P-90-ish pickups and so does Ronny Sigo.

Apparantly, the pickups in the 62' Jazz re-issue are actually just re-housed Strat pickups, so the difference in sound between it and the Jag isn't very much anymore

the pickups on the japanese jazzmasters are just rehoused strat pickups, but the US reissues are much different. The jaguar pickups are strat pickups in a shielding claw. it really does help with noise issues, especially if it's grounded properly. my jaguar has very little noise since i wax-potted the pickups.

the 1 meg pots and the diverse switching options pretty much obliterate the strat-like qualities of the pickups.
