I have a 1960 Jazzmaster (neck date- 8-60). The headstock decal is almost illegible and I am curious if I should replace it and what is the process to authenticate, etc.? Would this diminish the value?

Likely yes, especially if the guitar is otherwise unmolested.

I would leave it be and let nature take its course.

Thanks for the quick reply.

It isn't "unmolested", just a poor refinish (Dark Blue) on the body. According to my friend who was the second owner, it was originally "Shell Pink" and that didn't set well with him when he got it in '62, so he had a friend repaint it. Not sure he really remembers the exact color, as I see what looks to me to be splotches of Dakota Red on it. I'll most likely refinish it in that color. I traded him a slot machine for it about 12 years ago and now having the pickups rewound. Love the neck!

In that case (you intend to do a full restoration) a new headstock decal might be in order. You might also consider a matching headstock color if you intend to refin.

The neck finish appears to me to have always been natural. Regarding a new decal, I have to take the guitar to an authorized Fender Service Center for authentication, correct? Do you know where the nearest one is to me? I live in Redding, Northern California.

Thanks,

Jim
