Hey guys,

I'm currently searching for a vintage Fender Mustang circa 1964-1966. I actually started out looking for a more recent Fender Jaguar but I've decided I own enough modern made guitars and seeing as I'd saved up some cash thought I'd get my first real vintage Fender as a treat but with one eye on the investment also.

Anyways 1960s Jaguars are way out of my price range so I looked around and found Mustangs seem to fit the bill for me pretty perfectly right now taking the style of guitar and price range into consideration.

Only trouble is the most I've ever spent on a guitar is around £600-£650 (around $950-$1000) on a 2005 Gibson Les Paul Special and a 2003 American Standard Strat (Les Paul had a previous owner and the Strat was brand new) so I'm very conscious about making sure I'm not paying over the odds for a vintage Mustang.

I've done my fair share of research over the past week on current and completed eBay listings as well as trawling a few other forums for the value of an old Mustang but a lot of those forum posts I came across are a good 5-6 years old and the current eBay listings seem to be considerably higher.

I understand these old guitars are only ever going to increase with price over time but I wanted to run it by you guys first and get an up to date ball park figure I could expect to pay for one I've found for sale over here in the UK. It's an all original 1966 Fender Mustang in Olympic white, few digs and scratches as you might expect but otherwise totally sound, original pickups and electronics etc and comes with the original hard case. The seller is asking £1500 or $2330 but he's also willing to listen to offers. Can anybody help me out in knowing if this is about the right price or not?

Thanks in advance guys :D

$2330 *might* be a little high, contingent upon the condition of the instrument and whether the original HSC were included or not. I've seen passable vintage Mustangs here in the colonies priced anywhere from between $1200 to $2200. You might monitor Ebay and see what similar guitars are commanding.

Thanks Arjay. Hard to resist pulling the trigger but I'll keep an eye on eBay. Another 1964 Mustang has become available and asking for a little less than the '66 albeit in a slightly less preferred color, dakota red. Pre CBS though....is there major difference in quality between pre cbs and cbs stangs?

Mainly the mystique of knowing that Leo might've actually *touched" the pre-CBS guitar during some point in its manufacturing process. Dakota Red is a nice color for a Mustang, despite the alleged majority preference for blue.

I hear you. Well my impatience got the better of me after I made the guy an offer and managed to secure a deal a few hundred less than what he was asking so i'm pretty pleased.

Have to admit the mystique of the pre CBS in Dakota Red started to make it an extremely difficult call but I guess I just have a thing for that Olympic White/red tortoise combo with a rosewood neck.

Should be with me by Thursday with a bit of luck. Appreciate the help btw!

Oly White with tortoise-shell is a great color combo -- post some pics after you take delivery.

Congratulations and RAWK ON!
