The appeal for me is the 9.5" neck radius that both have. I have a '62 American Vintage Reissue, which has fantastic tone (to me), but the round 7.25" neck radius is hard for me to play, since all my other guitars have flatter radii.

Anybody here own a Classic Player Jazzmaster (made in Mexico, I believe?) or a Made in Japan Jazzmaster? Anybody own both? I'm curious how you like them. How does the neck feel? Are the pickups the same tone-wise as the ones on mine? If you have both, would you recommend one over the other? $800 for a Classic Player Jazzmaster, if it sounds and plays good, would be worth it to me.

As I understand it, the MIJ Jazzmasters aren't available new anymore, but I see a lot of used ones on ebay. Maybe I'm wrong about that?

Thanks for the opinions!

Hi IceTre,

If you prefer 9.5" radius then you are probably best avoiding MIJ/CIJ Jazzmasters. AFAIK, they all have vintage 7.25" radius fingerboards. Certainly all the ones they currently produce do: http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/products_jazzmaster.html

They list the specs in metric measurements but 184mm = 7.25"

I've had my CP Jazzmaster since they were introduced. It's a replacement for the '63 I sold in a younger (stupider) moment. From a playing standpoint the weight, balance and neck are as I remember the first one. Sound wise to my ear the pups are a little hotter, not a bad thing.
The feature I'm really happy with is the new break angle at the bridge, and the bridge as well. The strings actually stay in place. On the '63 the low E and the A strings would pop off the saddles evey now and then to protest a heavy right hand.

Cheers,
John.E

Thanks guys. Anybody else want to comment on the Japanese and/or Mexican Jazzmasters?

The Classic Player version has hotter pickups than the AVRI. MIJ Jazzmasters basically have Strat pickups under the Jazzmaster covers. So no, neither of them sound like an AVRI.

And BearBoy is correct, MIJ Jazzmasters have vintage radii and frets.

FWIW, your Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo Jazzmasters also have 7.25" radii.

Yes they do, but the OP should think about maybe just swapping his AVRI neck for a Strat 9.5", that way he keeps his guitar sound and has 2 necks to choose from.

Thanks, that's good info about the pickups. I'm gonna try to find a Mexico JM in a store so I can hear how the hotter pickups sound.

Is it possible to buy the AVRI pickups separately? The Seymour Duncan on my Thurston Moore sounds to me like my AVRI pickup, at least the neck one. I suppose you could buy those if you don't like the MIM or MIJ pickups.

I know the TM and LR have 7.25", and it causes problems for me. After playing my Les Paul, for example, I'll pick up the Jazzmaster and play some skipped-strings arpeggios, and when trying to play one of the two high strings and the pick will just hit air, because I'm used to the flatter necks. When I only play the 7.25" necks then the muscle memory adjusts and I don't have the problem. But switching between 7.25 and 12" radii necks messes me up. So that's why I'd prefer a 9.5".

The '62 AVRI pickups are readily available, and relatively inexpensive. I'm not sure about the '65 AV pickups.
