I was super excited when it arrived yesterday until I tried to play it. The action was way too low and buzzing like crazy. So after a couple of hours of trying things, I think I have it correct now, BUT I had to do somethings that I wouldn't expect to do on a guitar at this price point:

Shim the nut

Shim the neck (to tilt the head stock forward)

Add more neck relief than the EVH specs (although it does say to set the board almost flat)

And raise the tremolo

The issue now is that the tremolo is no longer on top of the body like it should be. My suspicion is that I ended up with a bum neck pocket.

Or, am I just expecting too much from a guitar. Any thoughts?

Could be many things are new to all of this ? Have you ever had a Floyd rose? Could be the way you set it up or not doing a set right. If its brand new it should be under warranty.

I had a similar problem with mine. Part of the problem was the strings. Also there wasn't enough tension on the Floyd springs. I changed out the strings (Ernie Ball Cobalt .009s), set the neck relief @ .010mm @ the 8th fret in standard tuning A440 hz., set the action at 1.5mm on the 1st and 6th strings at the 12th fret, and adjusted the trem springs to provide adequate tension to hold the bridge down when bending the 1st or 2nd strings at least one whole step. The guitar plays great now. If you measure everything and make sure it is within specs, it should meet or exceed a certain standard of playability. You shouldn't have to do all of that shimming unless there is a more significant problem. Hope this helps.

What were the specs when you started? (Nut height, action, relief, trem settings...)

The list of things you did is really exceptional - I don't even remember the last time I did all that on a single guitar. That leads me to think there is something fundamentally wrong with either the guitar or your setup.

The advice from dustywest is OK, but I'd rather take the guitar to a pro for a full setup. Like you wrote, it ain't the cheapest guitar so the additional setup price ain't much.

@jmattis Glad you think it's ok, since it's straight out of the owner's manual. If you're not comfortable making adjustments to your guitar, by all means pay someone else to do it.

The post was just IMHO - after reading the OP's procedure list (plus that there still is the trem issue), I'd rather advice to have the guitar checked by a pro than mess with it even more, not knowing the OP's skill level.

Sorry if that's stepping on your toes

No problem, those were just some steps I took to correct some fret buzz and it worked. The measurements are tangible guidelines that help indicate which corrective actions to take. I totally respect your preference to let a tech take a look at it.
