Hi everyone.
Ok, I am purchasing a Fender. Wanted one all along. After searching through hundreds of other makers, and almost resorting to an Epiphone LP, I am certain that a quality Fender is what I want. I have narrowed it down to two choices:

Jaguar Special HH MIJ or
Stratocaster Standard American

I know the Strat covers everything I want to do, but... I really love the look of the Jag. I really want the Jag. And considering it's $300 less then the Strat, even more so.

But price aside, I just like it. Here is my question: I play a lot of rock, and maybe some light metal. I want a versatile guitar sense I'm still getting a feel for my sound. I'm switching from Acoustic to electric, first time. Will I be able to play the likes of GnR, Bon Jovi, etc, with this? I know it is well known for it's surf sound. But I think I could get a unique sound mix from her.

The HH Jags are not really surf, but more Nirvana in spirit. The singles were more surf, at least as I see it. Can you use the HH to play what you would like? Sure. It is you as the player that is key to that one. It will do what the rig you run to and your fingers allow.

Thanks for the reply. Can you or anyone recommend an appropriate combo amp to run it to? I'm trying to stay under $300.00. It would be for rehearsal. Something that would allow some versatility. Thanks.

PS: Is the Jaguar MIJ a well made Fender? I want a serious pro grade rig. It seems in that price range, but with the extra controls on it, I was wondering if there were any quality sacrifices.

I think it is a well built guitar. In your price range for an amp I would say probably a Fender Mustang of some type. It will give you a good base. They have MP3 in for learning material, which is a nice feature. I am not sure if you are looking for tube amps or not, they tend to be higher priced (new) though there are some options in that range.

The exact one I'm getting is a Jag HH Special, about $800. And the amp, for reasonable rehearsal quality and versatility would be a Mustang? Any others, or exact model suggestions. Thanks.

I would suggest a Mustang III.

rjtsar, I've got a 2012 MIJ jaguar HH Specal also, great guitar. I just added an American tremolo after a Japanese tremolo lock failed. The Jaguar in any pickup configureation is a great guitar. The neck p.u. electronics give you virsatily and you'll be able to change your sound with the flick of one switch. Also blendining the two p.u.s you'll have more control. Its better on my short fingers than my 2010 Stratocaster HSS Specal and I like its sound more than my Strat HSS too.

When I use a Amp, I use a Fender Frontman 10, its more of a practice/montor amp. I mostly use my signal processer and ear buds. I'm just learing and you'll get better amp advice from the other fokes on this forum.

I'm baffled that you are not discussing scale length - have you bought the guitar already? Aside from pickup configuration (which can always be changed), many people find a real difference between the 24" and 25.5" scales in terms of comfort. THAT should take precedence over "who is the hottest chick in the bar" (aka looks).

You'd be surprised how good-looking a guitar can get once it makes nice sounds for you.

Your wish to have a "pro-level rig" and an amp budget of $300 is just unrealistic. My suggestion would be to look for a nice used tube amp, perhaps a 212 of some sort, with 40-50 watts. You can find them for under $500. I have a nice Peavey Classic 212 from the 70's that would go about $400 these days, and it would be appropriate for gigging. $200-$300 solid state amps will sound fine in your home, but once you put them in a band mix and in rooms larger than a bedroom, you'll be frustrated.

The Jaguar HH with the short scale and stopbar tail is going to be similar in function to a Gibson SG. The Strat is, well, a Strat... especially if you are talking an all single coil Strat!

+1!

Pro-level gear costs money. But if you're making money playing, then it's money well spent.
