I've been having issues with the tremolo unit on my Fender Classic Player Jaguar Special HH guitar. I've never had the chance to use the tremolo because of the numerous issues it's given me. At first the tiny screw that blocks the tremolo arm from being screwed all the way kept falling into the guitar and would just rattle in the unit. Now it creaks whenever I use it and the tuning goes completely off. Anyone know how to fix this?

Here's a link to Jag Trem setup instructions

Creaking, squeaking etc: lube every metal-to-metal contact point under the trem cover - especially the spring.

Players tend to forget that with certain vintage tremolo systems like this one that these type units were designed for heavy gauge strings, higher action and only an ever so slight depression of the arm for the so called, "Hawaiian Effect". Light gauge strings, low action and modern playing stylings create havoc exactly like you are complaining of including some or all of the strings jumping around or even off their respective bridge saddles. This is oftentimes prevalent when one is just playing the guitar 'normally'. Under these modern conditions and depending on the individual player, some of these vintage units can be made functional but only at best, to the originally intended degree. Either way, I wouldn't count on any serious stability or reliability. It is what it is.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

Even with a little depression of the arm it goes out of tune and creaks.

Agree with Martian that the Jag Trem wasn't meant to handle dive bombs, and that the Jag with its short scale works best with heavier than .009 string sets.

Still, I take the YMMV route ( 8) ) on that a Jag/JM trem shouldn't be disturbingly noisy (actually, I like the Jag/JM trem system better than the Strat type vintage tremolo), and that it can keep the guitar in tune if properly adjusted.

To GypsyFade: better check & lube the nut and string tree, too. A properly fitted bone/TUSQ nut never made a guitar worse...

I own three Jags, one is a Classic Player Special and I am not aware of any tiny screw that would prevent the Trem arm from being screwed in. It uses a trem arm spring that is available from GC and Sam Ash among others. And the only way that could fall into the cavity is if it is broken.

Classic Players respond best to 10's, Vintage Jags to 11's an higher as far as strings go.

Mine came with a little screw at the end of the hole, I believe it's used to adjust where you want the arm to sit.

New innovation I guess. Mine uses the same spring that some of the Strats use.
