I recently acquired a Fender D'Aquisto standard (2 pups) and there's precious little on the web about them. I have several big body electric guitars, and I think (I won't say this on a Gibson or Heritage fanatic site) it's better sounding than either of those brands. I have an ES-175 and an H-575 and at least compared to MINE to my ears it's better.

Anyway, I've read that Fender is not forthcoming about information on this guitar so... here I am. Does anyone know how many were made and what years they were made? How much was Jimmy D'Aquisto involved in its design? Was Fender's license to use the D'aquisto name only for a specific number of guitars?

There is one on ebay. Nice guitar and only $30,000 asking price, guess I'll pass.

Hi gnappi,
It may be that Fender isn't forthcoming on that guitar because we have no info on it....I'm guessing that's what you're saying. I googled D'Aquisto and found a decent amount of info including Wiki and the Official website. For Fender's part we distributed MIJ D'Aquisto's in the 80's as part of "the Master Series" and Fender also made some models in the Custom Shop in the mid-nineties through 2002. Since they all bore his name, I'm confident that he was quite involved with all models that we produced.
I'm not sure what kind of info you're looking for, but if we have it available, we're happy to share it.
All the best,
rob

Thank you much for the reply.

It would surprise me if Fender had no information on it, it's not like every day Fender gets involved in a project like the D'Aquisto.

Anyway, as I said above, there is no information on the number of guitars produced, what they sold for, where they were made, whether or not they had a case, any options like color, or whether its production was limited by Mr. D'Aquisto's death, or some other contractual agreement, what his input in the design was, what years they were produced.

I think this is the most excellent guitar in my collection, and I know nothing about this mostly unknown work of art. And believe me I do not use the term art lightly.

Whether or not it's understood at this moment, this is a piece of guitar history. Anything you can enlighten me on would be most appreciated.

Regards,

Gary

Hi Gary,
...been out and about so apologies for the delay in further reply. With regards to production numbers, unless something is specifically a Limited Edition, as a rule Fender doesn't release those numbers. With regards to the Custom Shop, the policy is pretty much the same, but by the "nature of the beast" I think you can safely count on smaller numbers.
At any rate, here is what I have on the "Standard" Double hum models:

Pickups: 2 Double Coil Humbucking Pickups (Neck and Bridge)
Pickup Switching: 3-Way Selector Switch For Neck/Both/Bridge

(521) Natural,
(537) Violin Sunburst

My dad had a D'Aquisto style model from the 70s. I've never seen any info on it. It's a 1971 Fender LTD. To my knowledge they only made a few handfuls of them, but I never knew anything about them. This is his ACTUAL guitar. It's at a guitar shop in Washington.
