Hi!

I own a 32 year old Fender Lead I and unfortunately the Nut has broken on it. I need to find a replacement Nut but just can't find one. Does the scale and radius of the neck of the Lead I match any Strat neck so that I can buy the appropriate Strat replacement Nut? The original Nut was made of plastic, I guess I'd like a bone nut now :-)

Any help appreciated, cheers!

My Lead II just turned 33 last weekend so I spent some decent time with it for the first time in years; now I remember just how nice these are (although mine could use a serious set-up).

The neck is the same as a vintage Fender - 25 1/2" scale. Mine is a bit narrower than the current Fender American Vintage strats (it's closer to 1 9/16" wide at the nut instead of the usual 1 5/8" or 42mm), but the string spacing is the same. You should be able to get any good luthier to fix you up with a replacement nut.

Specs previously on the forum here:
fender lead series guitars
(With valuable contributions from JohnC... )

From Ceallach:
Quote:
Vintage style “Soft C” profile neck with a 7¼" (184 mm) radius.
Neck width at nut 1.60" (40.64 mm), plus applied finish thickness on 1981 models.

BTW, JouniL, making your own nut from a blank block requires some skills but is quite possible. The hardest part is to get the old nut out without chipping the fretboard, after that it's just sanding, filing, polishing and checking (checking checking...) the fit. IMHO, unbleached bone nut would be just right for a 30 year old gem.

Thnx guys!

I've looked around but can't find a perfectly matching nut anywhere so I've decided to build my own. I've done it 20 years ago on some cheaper guitars. I ordered the String Lifter, String Action Gauge and String Spacing Rule from StewMac to help me gettings started (I actually have some old nut material left). The nut files were too expensive, gonna find better and cheaper ones at my local hardware shop (here in sweden) .

So you went to high-tec right away..? :D

Nut files for a one-guitar-job can easily be made from feeler gauges or other suitable pieces of metal; link DIY Nut files
