Well, I play a lot of punk and grunge, and was looking around for a jazzmaster. Unfortunately, it seems you can't get a "proper" jazzmaster (so not a blacktop) anywhere inbetween squier and classic player. Shall I get one of the squier vintage modifieds and swwap out the pickups or shall I be looking at another brand?

Jazzmaster has always been a high end model, not an entry level guitar, and priced accordingly.

That said, IMHO the Squier Jazzmaster line gives a lot for the money. VintMods 'round 300€ - really nice guitars. And the J.Mascis sells for 'round 400€; tried it & loved the sound and feel - the color combination though is hideous.

And that said... wouldn't a Fender Top Of The Line Jazzmaster be a bit much for punk/grunge attitude..?

A real punk would make his own Jazzmaster from scratch out of old tennis shoes and soda caps.

The answer really depends on your budget. Real Jazzmasters exist at quite a few price points.

You have the new Squire VM series, the Classic Players, the Japanese, the AVRI, Thinskins, and Custom Shop

IMO the best bang for your buck would be a used Japanese one. I recently picked up a real nice Old Candy Apple Red Jazzmaster off eBay for $750 shipped from Japan to Canada.

By all accounts the new Vintage Modifieds are great value. For $4 - 500 you could probably have a new one and upgrade all the electronics including the pickups if you didn't like the stock set up.

I you look frequently, you'll find what you are after. Good luck.
