My first post on this forum. I am looking for a decent beginners guitar for my 13 year old son and came across this local listing: http://www.dba.dk/elguitar-squier-lp-squier/id-87423735/ The ad is in danish, so you won't be able to read it, but could you please tell me what we are looking at here, as I am a bit confused?

Hey,

It's a squier M-70. This site dates them around 2002 and made in Korea: http://www.elderly.com/items/30U-12108.htm

Apparently they started life being manufactured and branded by DeArmond guitars until Fender bought the factory and changed the headstock badge to Squier.

Hope that helps!

Umm - that part isn't quite true. Here's the real story:

Fender acquired the DeArmond name when they acquired Guild in the middle. After the acquisition Fender made the decision to put out a made in Korea version of several Guild models under the DeArmond name.

A few years later Fender decided to retire USA Guild electric guitar lineup; at the same time they also made the decision to rebrand the MIK models to the Squier name. Fender never owned a factory in Korea; they just retained various manufacturers/factories over there to produce various lines (Squier, DeArmond, and certain Fender models).

The bottom line is that this is an MIK version of a 50s/60s Guild model produced after Fender acquired the Guild brand; from what I remember all but the bottom line DeArmond-Squier models were pretty nice for the money.

Squier 24 series link suggests that's model M-77 (block inlays on the neck)...
But anyways, the 24series gets a lot of compliments on the squier-talk.com forum, and the price is where it should be.
If the guitar is in any playable (set-uppable) condition, I'd consider that a good deal.

The big question here is, will Mr. Thirteen appreciate the looks, sound, history and background of the guitar... 8)
If not, there are many brand new Squiers for the same price range, in both 24 and 25.5 inch scales.

Cheers for clearing that up. I'd only read a little about it. Your explanation is much more accurate! Certainly a nice looking guitar in my eyes.

Thanks a lot for your replies.

Mr. Thirteen does indeed like the looks of it, as he (sry guys) prefers the Les Paul look over the classic Fenders... He listens to The Doors, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Nirvana - that kind of stuff. He is not into heavy metal (Thank God).

How do you think the Squier M-77 will compare soundwise, to an Epiphone Standard Les Paul? Again i do apologise for my son's bad taste  We will probably buy either the Squier M-77 or this one: http://www.dba.dk/elguitar-epiphone-les-paul/id-87415603/?IsPrivate=True&PostId=95671b2c-8d42-4392-b53c-e43508291587

I don't know much about guitars but i suspect that the M-77 guitar with its Duncan Seymour pickups will have a nice warm "forgiving" tone, but may also sound a bit "muddy" same goes for the Epiphone? What I am trying to ask you guys is (I think), which one will sound less muddy? Where do we get the most "twang for our bucks"?

Sorry if this comes late and you've already made your decision...

As a totally personal opinion, I'd go for that Squier. It may not be a genuine collector's item, but it's very rare. And those SeymourDuncans add to the level of interest.

On the other hand, Epi LP's you see everyday and everywhere - IMHO not much personality. Plus, an E-LP I owned years ago was just crap, so I'm probably a little biased.
(Sidenote: It may have been a mondaybuilt, my hollowbody Epi is just great...)

Soundwise, only playing both guitars would answer that muddy guitar or Muddy Waters question.

Thirteen and those idols... you may be releasing Godzilla.

Those Squier guitars are great. They scored very high reviews in guitar mags when they came out and in one I read it came out on top in a shoot out between the Squier, an epiphone, a Vintage and another model that I can't remember right now (Squier 1st, Vintage 2nd the Epi came 3rd).
