I've got a 50th anniversary Jag, and like most Jaguars, it has a glossed laquer neck finish.
My other guitars are a strat, tele and a Taylor which all have a more smooth and matte neck finish, and I'd like the same for my Jaguar. How should I do it?
Because I expect some players here to have done the same, I hope to get a good response:)

I've done some browsing online, and some recommend using 0000 steel wool to sand it down.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxGz6IZ9BFI - here's the video.

However, I noticed that this was mainly recommended for guitars with polyester or urethane finishes. When speaking of guitars with nitro finish, the treatment with steel wool was less recommended. Anybody know the reason?

I use steel wool only on frets and other metal parts, but that's just a personal preference - I also don't like the abrasive sponges, they're too uncontrollable.

A good quality wet/dry sandpaper, very fine (2000 or 1600 grit) is OK for nitro (as for any lacquer) smoothing. Don't wet the neck at all, but soak the paper for ten minutes in water, and keep a cotton rag handy to dry the neck if needed. Don't oversand it: just a few light strokes will do the job.

The other option is to play it 8 hr/day for 10 years. :)

My MIM Classic Player has a nice neck. My 62 and 50th anniversary have that laquer. Let me know how the sandpaper works out. The laquer really isn't bad if your hands have zero sweat. Not really sure why they produce them that way.
