I own a Fender Lead III that I've stopped playing years ago, but I'm olding on to it because it's the very first "new" Fender guitar I've ever purchased. Any of you owns or knows someone who has one as well?

I was told recently that it is an collectors item. If that's true, does anyone know how much it's worth. I'm a little curious. The finish is a little worn, cracks and scratches , but it still plays like a champ!

Thanks in advance to who ever replies

eh, prices on ebay have been going up for the leads, but only because some people consider them to be vintage fender guitars or becasue they are relatively unique.
if you are interested in selling it, do it on ebay to get the most money.
but the lead series has nowhere near the collectability of strats, teles, and jazzmasters. or even the lesser-valued jaguars and mustangs.
they are still too obscure and marred by the fact that they were produced during the worst part of the CBS era to really be collectable.

wait until one of those guys buying them on ebay becomes a rock star.

Hi, Yes indeed the Lead series are going to be collectable...starting to go up now! The reason is simple. They are very nice USA guitars with the quality of any strat or tele. However, finding a really nice one is hard to achieve due to typical '80's modifications and a bad batch of finishes...particularly the transparent red and solid black...which clouded up after a few years. I have collected all three models. I found that the burst finishes not only look better but do not have the flawed cloudiness or cracking that plagued the other colors. I put my original picguard/pickup assemblies in storage and use a single Seymout Duncan JB with a single volume on all three models and they sound bad-ass. If I ever opt to sell them I will slap the original parts on. I have had them all professionally refretted with nearly the same wire....just a bit taller and had the plastic nuts replaced with bone. As my tech says...a new fretjob is like new tires on an older car. Frets are normal wear items and should not have a negative bearing on a guitars value if done properly.
