Loungers,

I like everything about this Jag except the neck. What changes to a new neck would I like to see:

- wider fret board surface (if neck is slighty tilted toward low E vs hi E, the opposite E slides off too easily for me)
- bigger fret wire
- 9.5 radius instead of the current 7.25 radius

Suggestions please for how to find such a neck. I know only how to accomplish this by a ready made or custom order neck from Warmoth.

#1 beef with the current neck is the E strings sliding off. Does ordering the Warmoth (their longest for these necks) 1 11/16" nut automatically give the new neck more surface width than the Marr neck? Is part of the E sliding off problem the 7.25 radius, and 9.5 will help that?

If Warmoth is the path to take, any "watch outs" in the order, particularly as related to ordering a Mustang / Jag neck (that is how Jag neck is classified on their website)? If your advice is to go outside of Warmoth, what are the pitfalls there? Thanks in advance for assistance.

Regards, Craig H

I'd take your guitar to a good tech in your area first. No way would I pay that kind of money for a guitar only to replace the neck.

Warmoth makes a great product. I've had 4 or 5 necks from them. All superb. Their Jag necks max out at 1-11/16".

Your guitar may just have an improperly seated neck and could be fixed with an adjustment. Just unscrew the neck screws by a quarter to a half turn. Retune to proper pitch then tighten back up. That could be all you need. I have heard of this problem on a bunch of Marrs though.

One guy even recommended just yanking hard on the neck to seat it properly. Good luck.

Hey Craig,
I received my JM Jag last July, having heard about the string spacing issue. The Mastery bridge some folks mentioned probably wouldn't work for me because I use a wound 3rd string, so the intonation could be a problem. The Mustang bridge that comes with this guitar has a too-wide 2 3/16" string spacing, which leaves both E strings much too close to the edge of the neck. I solved the problem by grinding down each barrel so they'd fit closer together, then filing out the holes for the bolt that adjust those barrels. Bringing it to a
2 1/16" spacing works well. Having heard that standard Jag bridges have a problem with the strings jumping, I've wondered why people don't just file a small groove to seat each string down lower. That's what I would have tried if my original attempt didn't work. I really like the Jag's neck, even though it's a bit beefier than what I'm more used to. There's no way I'd replace it. As for "yanking the neck" one direction or the other; that would hardly solve any problem if both E strings are too close to the edge, eh? I strongly recommend bringing the strings closer at the bridge. That's all you need to have a perfect Jag......

Just re-set the neck. Google it and follow your instructions. The great thing about Fender guitars with bolt on necks is their modular nature.

Also remember that the bridge can take a knock and end up sitting off-centre in the cups, give it a jiggle and see if you can sort it out that way. You're only talking about moving it a fraction to make a big difference to your spacing. This is a basic part of the set-up on a Jaguar/jazzmaster/Mustang but just about every one I see has the bridge sitting way off centre.

Try these options before wasting money on a Mastery bridge.

As far as the "vintage" Jag/Jazz bridge, it depends on string gauge and your playing style whether or not the strings stay in place. I use 11's on mine even though Fender ships them with 10's. I tried the 09's back in the '60s and it doesn't matter what your playing style, 09s will jump out. Remember that at 24" scale, the 10s on a Jag feel much like 9s on a Strat or Tele (25.5" scale.)

Also, if all you have ever played has been the modern 9.5" radius neck (or Gibsons 14" ?) the 7.25" radius will be tricky until you get used to it.

Loungers,

Interesting stuff. I just rec'd an AVRI Tele 72 and found the same problem. The high E is almost off the fret board and the low E is in way too far. The guitar had a couple of other minor issues (blemish on side, not grounded properly) so Musicians Friend recommended I send it back. It will be interesting to see if I have the same issue on the neck. If this can be fixed with a proper set up, I am good with that (provided Fender foots the bill!)

Just wondering if this issue is common to the Marr Jag or all the new 7.25" US models.
