I can confirm: neck in SG 12 is heavy too. I am affraid every neck with 12 tuning machines becomes heavy. Is Electric XII better ballanced?

I believe it is since the original Electric XII was based on the Jazzmaster body and they tend to be heavier than a Strat (or a mahogany SG for that matter).

I have a range of 12 Strings Fenders, from an original Fender XII through to Custom Shop Tele XIIs.

What I can say is that the CIJ Strat 12 strings are really good 12 string electrics and IMHO blow Riccy 12s away, both in playability and also in sound. The ruptation of Riccy 12s is probably heavily based on their AVAILABILITY to the early bands and consequently their visibility to most musos. The incredibly thin necks of the Riccy 12s are a nightmare to play compared to a Fender XII neck.

Fender don't really need to reissue the XII however, you can get XIIs made by the Custom Shop if you have the dire need!

And of course, here's the original...

Eric Clapton used the Electric XII to record Dance the Night Away during his Cream days in 1967.

Jimmy Page recorded Stairway To Heaven with an Electric XII, which can also be heard on Jeff Beck's Beck's Bolero.

But the most influential endorsers of the XII were without doubt Pete Townshend of the Who and Tom Petty.

What to say...? Custom Telecaster XII looks perfect for me. But AFAIK it costs $5000. No comments.

OR you can wait until one appears second hand on eBay. They are much cheaper then!

The Telecaster XII was made in 1995 and discontinued in 1998.

Not many people play a 12-string all the time for every song, so if you're not Roger McGuinn this may be a niche guitar for you. Take a look at the Fender Bass VI. Vintage prices are astronomically high. Fender has been reissuing some of their long discontinued guitars, basses and amps. This past July they released a Squier version of the Bass VI. I ordered one in September, but I won't get it until 2014 because Fender underestimated the demand. I think a Squier Electric XII sold at a similar price point would yield a similar result. Who wants to pay a fortune for a guitar that won't get much use?

A niche instrument + good quality + fair price = Increase in sales in an otherwise dead guitar market. Just my 2 cents.

Have to agree about the string configuration on the Ricky. It makes for a different sound, as far as picking single notes, on the down stroke(for the lower 4 strings). Finger-picking(on the up stroke are the same) and strumming, pretty much work out to similar results. My 360-12 Ricky is balanced quite well !!! It's not head-heavy at all. Must admit, I've only tried a Fender XII back in 60's. Also, the 330 is one that didn't thrill me. But the 330's certainly have a place !!! The 12 saddle bridge is very important. For the Ricky, it's a welcome add-on, to the stock bridge!!! JMO,Art
